3LD Art & Technology

Taking it back to 2018, 3LD Art & Technology Center became the portal for .zip, an immersive new media exhibition that quickly went viral on social media.
Conceived by artist Yuxi Cao (James), .zip was an audiovisual exploration of our reality.

Using an album format, nine distinct audiovisual works were “unzipped” across our massive scale projections. The result was a multi-dimensional journey through time, space, questioning the past and future of humans, the arts and digital experiences.

In his words: “The ‘.zip’ exhibition at 3LD Art & Technology Center was more than just a debut – it was the catalyst. It uncompressed my vision, marking the exact moment I transitioned from a student experimenting with code to a professional artist defining my own visual language. Now, I’m thrilled to invite you to the next chapter of this evolution.”

We still get asked about this one. And for good reason. It redefined what an immersive gallery experience could be.

The best part? We aren’t done yet. 🤫

3LD is currently co-creating an ambitious next step that pushes the boundaries of art and tech even further. Stay tuned. 🚀

What happens when AI controls the social fabric of an underground city? 📉

Created at 3LD by artist Peter Burr, this immersive simulation features a “smart architecture” governed by AI designers. It’s a complex look at class hierarchies and digital control, built during a residency that pushed the boundaries of realtime technology.

Reflecting about the project, Peter notes: “3LD gave me something rare: unbridled access to space, equipment, and time to build immersive virtual worlds.”

We pride ourselves on being a “Techie Paradise”, as described by New York Times, supporting artists to bring their most ambitious visions to life.

In 2018, 3LD produced the groundbreaking immersive work 3/Fifths written by James Scruggs and directed by Tamilla Woodard.

This project received early support from Creative Capital but the actual production was funded entirely from 3LD’s Virtuous Cycle production fund.

This blunt experience was an examination of the history of violence against black people and the persistence of embedded white supremacy in the United States with unblinking honesty and dark humor.

“Half immersive spectacle, half cabaret, this satire is a provocative and unnerving exploration of American racism.” Laura Collins-Hughes, The New York Times

NYC's vibrant small arts organizations are fighting for survival amid the near-total shutdown prompted by COVID-19.

04/16/2020

Hi Everyone we are still here working from home. Working on all the digital aspects of One Woman War and Not-Knowing. So there is a lot to do. It looks like we are again moving toward a very hard time for small businesses, non profits and independent artists and studios. We need to speak up for ourselves and not let disaster capitalism as usual take us out. Please talk to your institutional funders and ask them to work with us this time instead of looking at it as a Darwinian opportunity to "cut the wheat from the chaff." Silly corporatist, MBA nonsense like "viability" and "resiliance" criteria are completely inappropriate in a situation this profoundly devastating. We need to work together and share the pain this time and do what we can to keep the arts alive and preserve our culture because of its intangible value not just because it's an economic engine. The arts can be a leader in helping us come back to ourselves safely and sanely. 3LD is looking at interim immersive audience configuration modeling and detailed affordable remote collaboration tools and methods as we continue to do the most important thing we can do to survive this disaster: make new art.

Most of us have had all of our revenue generating projects cancelled. We all need to start preparing to help each other with the hard reboot that will be necessary.

03/31/2020

We are continuing work on our current artistic projects Not Knowing and One Woman War digitally and collaborating online.

We are very concerned that patterns we have seen in past disaster recovery efforts will repeat themselves and do more damage to small businesses and not for profits. Currently art organizations like ours who do not already receive City or State funding are being cut out of private foundation assistance and the only help being offered are Small Business Association loans. The last thing a small business, for profit or non profit, needs during or after a disaster is more debt.

Like most arts and culture groups and individual artists, all of our commissions and revenue generating projects have been indefinitely delayed or cancelled. But money is not what motivates our work so we will continue as we did on 9/11, during Hurricane Sandy and during the 08-14 recession to make art and to try to find opportunity, connection and collaboration in adversity.

Please stay home and stay safe and healthy and we'll see you online soon.
