What is Shikkoku?

Shikkoku is the iconic jet black of Japanese lacquerware, created by mixing purified urushi with iron powders. The result is a surface that absorbs light while maintaining a deep, mirror-like gloss.

This rich black serves as the foundation for traditional decoration techniques such as maki-e (sprinkled gold or silver), chinkin (carved lines filled with metal), and raden (shell inlay). Built through multiple layers and careful polishing, shikkoku creates a depth that feels almost endless.

More than a color, shikkoku is a cornerstone of Japanese lacquer art. Many works on view at Onishi Gallery employ this technique—visit us to experience it in person.

What is Urushi?

Japanese lacquer made from the sap of the urushi tree, harvested drop by drop and refined through time, patience, and skill. Applied in ultra-thin layers and cured slowly, urushi creates surfaces that are both deeply luminous and incredibly durable. A material shaped by centuries of technique, meant to last for generations.
