Each month there is a theme to what we paint in our online class with Jennifer Gennari | Oil painter & Animal Portrait Artist , and this month it’s personality! You can have a great reference, and it can even be composed well. But if you don’t catch the heart of the animal no one will connect with all your hard work!
This month we will be painting one image a week, talking about everything that that goes into getting the actual animal on the canvas, not just line and shape copying.
So if you are interested in tapping into the thing that breaths an extra bit of life into your portraits, sign up now at the link in our bio!

45-minute video - YouTube/drawingamerica -all about materials!

Oil painting materials, palette, and brushes — this episode of The Material List goes inside the studio of figurative painter Sean Layh, breaking down exactly what’s on his palette and why. From custom Masonite panels built from scraps of his own discarded paint, to his full brush kit, pigments, and mediums (or lack thereof) behind his alla prima painting technique, this is a real working artist’s materials setup, explained brush by brush.

Inside baseball but for painters!

We sat down with Frances Bell — whose work currently hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London — for a long, unhurried conversation about how she actually builds a portrait.

The real thinking: how she reads a sitter, the decisions she makes before the brush ever touches the canvas, where she lets things stay loose and where she commits, and the quiet problems every painter wrestles with but rarely talks about.

It’s the kind of conversation you usually only get standing in the studio with someone a few steps ahead of you. We’re grateful she was so generous with it.
