Kicking off the week with a little extra reach.

New week. New momentum. Same commitment to showing up, stretching a little farther, and making some space for possibility.

Here’s to starting Monday on a high note—and maybe with an extension to match.

Let’s move.

Sometimes care looks less like pushing forward and more like knowing when to turn inward.

There is strength in ambition, discipline, and showing up—but there is also strength in listening to yourself closely enough to recognize when you need rest, space, softness, or simply a moment to regroup.

Self-love is not always grand or visible.

Sometimes it is setting a boundary.
Sometimes it is choosing rest without apology.
Sometimes it is giving yourself the same patience you so easily offer someone else.

The body carries more than movement. It carries our effort, our stress, our memories, and everything we have not yet found words for.

Taking care of ourselves means making room for all of it.

What would it look like to give yourself what you actually need today?

Before trust, there is hesitation. Before connection, there is distance.

In Equipoise, two bodies move through a charged landscape of instinct—advance or retreat, resist or surrender, fight or flee.

They circle. Recoil. Reach. Pull away.

Every gesture seems to ask:
Can I trust you?

And then—touch.

From that first point of contact, the choreography changes. The dancers never fully let go. What began as distance becomes a physical conversation of weight, resistance, counterbalance, and dependence.

They pull against one another. Support one another. Destabilize and recover.

Created and performed in Las Vegas as part of Coalesce, Equipoise explores the fragile space between self-preservation and vulnerability.

Because trust does not always mean fear disappears.
Sometimes it means choosing connection while the instinct to run is still there.

What does it take to remain connected once trust has been given?

Alt Text Description:
Rehearsal footage from Harper Continuum Dance Theatre’s Equipoise shows two dancers moving across a large studio with a dark reflective floor. They begin apart, approaching and retreating through tense, cautious gestures before reaching toward one another. Once physical contact is made, the dancers remain connected, shifting through weight-sharing, pulling, lowering, and partnered movement that explores the tension between fight, flight, and trust.

A body does not stop speaking when it leaves the stage. Sometimes, changing the space simply asks us to connect differently.

As We Breathe marked Harper Continuum Dance Theatre’s first step into dance film—a new way of asking what movement could become when the choreography was no longer bound by a traditional performance space.

But at the heart of As We Breathe was a more uncomfortable question:

What if the thing standing between who we are and who we could become is ourselves?

The work examined the tension between limitation and possibility, destruction and healing, resistance and release. The camera allowed those ideas to live differently—closer, more intimate, and shaped by the architecture and environment surrounding the body.

Movement could be confined.
It could push back.
It could reach.
It could change its relationship to the space around it.

As We Breathe became more than HCDT’s first dance film. It opened another way of questioning what movement can reveal about the choices, conflicts, and contradictions we carry within ourselves.

Are we our own worst enemy—or can we also become our own cure?

Today, on National Nonprofit Day, Harper Continuum Dance Theatre is taking a moment to recognize some of the people and organizations who helped transform an artistic vision into a nonprofit organization.

When HCDT began the legal formation and filing process in New York City, Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts provided valuable guidance and support as we navigated the legal and administrative requirements of establishing a nonprofit.

Their assistance gave HCDT access to knowledge and resources that are often difficult for emerging arts organizations to navigate on their own. It also reflects the larger impact of VLA’s work—helping artists and arts organizations protect their creative work, build stronger organizational foundations, and move forward with greater stability.

We are equally grateful to our Board of Directors, whose financial and administrative support, together with the leadership of Heather Harper, Founder & Artistic Director, was instrumental in transitioning Harper Continuum Dance Theatre into a nonprofit organization and laying the foundation for its continued growth.

And our gratitude extends far beyond the formation itself.

To every artist, collaborator, donor, volunteer, audience member, advisor, advocate, and friend who has invested their time, resources, expertise, or belief in HCDT: thank you.

A nonprofit is more than its legal designation. It is a community of people choosing to invest in a mission and helping create the structure that allows that mission to continue.

On National Nonprofit Day, we celebrate the community behind Harper Continuum Dance Theatre and the people who have helped us continue creating, connecting, and moving forward.

Art takes a community. We are grateful for ours.
