Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950)
Twelve Scenes in the Japan Alps: Mount Hodaka, 1926

According to Dorothy Blair in the catalogue for the 1930 exhibition of Shin Hanga at the Toledo Museum of Art, the blocks for this print were carved by Maeda Yujiro (1889-1957) and the print was initially issued in an edition (or batch) of 90 impressions.

Kawase Hasui (1883-1957)
Selection of Scenes from Japan: No. 12, Goryo, Amakusa, 1922

"Selection of Scenes from Japan" was the only aiban-format series by Hasui published by Watanabe Shozaburo (1885-1962) and was conceived of with the intention of issuing the entire series in a limited edition sold by subscription.
Prints were hand-numbered on verso with a limited-edition seal and presented in a folder labeled with the number of the design in the series and the title of the print.

Thirty prints were produced before the Great Kanto Earthquake on September 1, 1923 destroyed Watanabe's premises along with the homes and studios of Hasui and many other artists and artisans working in the shin hanga movement.

We are open this weekend for our exhibition "Rediscovered Treasures-The León Chattah Collection of Modern Japanese Prints"

11am-5pm, appointments appreciated.

The exhibition features 70 works by Shin Hanga masters that were collected by Dr. Leon Chattah, and were 'hidden' away in a closet for over 40 years. The collection was only recently discovered by his family, and includes this 1931 print by Ito Shinsui: "The Second Collection of Modern Beauties: Hazy Moon on a Spring Night,"

Eight Views of Omi: The Floating Pavilion at Katada, 1918

In 1917 Watanabe and Shinsui embarked on a print series rooted in tradition; the landscape theme of Eight Views of Omi ( ), which was adapted from a classical Chinese landscape grouping, Eight Views of the Hsiao and Hsiang. The 'Eight Views' was a popular subject for numerous print series in the Edo Period (1600-1858).

This series was perhaps the pair's most creative, experimental and important collaboration. While adhering to the traditional subject, artist, carver, printer and publisher explored the possibilities of the woodblock print medium.

On view as part of Asia Week NY, the exhibition features 70 woodblock prints by 20th century shin hanga masters. ⁠

The collection was recently 're-discovered' in the back of a closet after being stored for almost 50 years, and we are so glad that these beautiful prints will be seeing the light of day after so long!⁠

The gallery is open 11am-5pm from Sept 10-18. No appointment necessary.
