Lost in the world of Kobi B. Bailey’s “Oil & Powda: The Unruly Spirit” at . 🇯🇲

At 115 inches, this fiber collage is a masterclass in Modern Fiber Alchemy—turning “waste” into a spiritually charged narrative of Jamaican identity.

Swipe for the details of this unruly spirit:

THE ALCHEMY OF RECOVERY

Bailey practices material alchemy, recovering discarded “base” fabrics like denim and rags to transform them into something “noble.” Each scrap carries a “social ghost” of the history it once touched.

ARCHITECTURE OF THE BEAST

The cow’s tactile form is built through a powerhouse of construction:

• Structural Crochet: Creates the interlocking, muscular “armor” of the form.

• Braided Ropework: Heavy-gauge braids act as the “bones” and sturdy outlines.

• Ripped-Strip Weaving: Bailey rips found fabric into long strips (not threads!) to build her tapestry, giving it a raw, organic texture.

• Intricate Appliqué: Layering fabrics to build “skin” with physical depth.

• Running Stitch: Rhythmic hand-stitching that maps the anatomy, nodding to traditional quilting as memory-keeping.

THE MOLA TRADITION

The vibrant sections echo the Mola tradition of the Guna people (Indigenous to Panama/Colombia). A visual language of resistance and pride, this “logic of layers” embeds memory directly into the fabric.

WHAT IS “OIL & POWDA”?

Naming the piece after Jamaican folk-spiritual “technology” (Revivalism/Obeah), Bailey frames the art as a ritual. Oil for healing and Powder for protection—healing the past while shielding the future.

The shaggy, frayed borders and ripped strips represent a spirit that cannot be contained. A must-see in Kingston!

Can we just talk about this dress!

Spotted in Jamaica, this chevron knit is pure fiber art joy and our inspiration of the day.

The brilliant color palette, the crisp stitch definition, and that classic polo collar—it’s a masterclass in texture!

I’m dreaming of recreating this in a sport-weight yarn with a top-down construction. It’s the perfect reminder of how fiber arts can capture the vibrant energy of a place. 🇯🇲

What are you creating right now that’s this vibrant? Tell us in the comments!

The Old Stone House of Brooklyn is a 1933 reconstruction of the original Vechte-Cortelyou House (c. 1699).

The original house was built next to the Gowanus Creek in what was then the village of Gowanus.

Originally a Dutch farm, the land was worked by enslaved African-Americans who performed the daily labor for the Vechte family.

Revolutionary War: It was the site of the climactic 1776 Battle of Brooklyn, where the Maryland 400 launched a heroic, sacrificial counterattack to save Washington’s army.

Before the original house was torn down, it was used as a clubhouse and became the first headquarters of the Brooklyn team that eventually became the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The current reconstruction stands near the original site in Washington Park, but it was shifted and raised from its 1699 foundation.

The house’s grounds are also the original location for the Kings County Fiber Festival!
