I heard somewhere that, while people think of memory (and, by extension, memories) like a videotape that can be rewound and replayed over and over, it is more accurately thought of like a painting: composed of layers upon layers, with each layer changing what can be experienced. I bought used de

cks because you’d said you liked them. I got used decks with sandpapery sides and scuffed and pocked edges - like the two of us. The original usefulness had disappeared due to the lack of wheels and all these age-marks. I learned that these were called “decks” – perhaps because they are composed of individual sheets. Individual sheets combined to make a whole new thing. I layered these old boards with stickers, objects, calligraphy, and symbols – elements of our life – to make a whole new thing. How interesting that layering creates a new form, which, in the case of skateboards, is a new object, usable, flexible, nimble… and enabling of such daring and dynamism.
