My recent trip to NYC was centered around seeing Jack Whitten: The Messenger
To say that this monumental exhibition of over 175 of Whitten’s works was powerful, inspirational, and timeless is an understatement. Whitten used the material and surface to create questions around memory, perceived realities, and how abstraction can be a form of cultural rebellion. He took me deep into his process and taught me the meaning of “controlled chance” and the importance of taking risks in order to find freedom in expansion. His work showed me the historical inequalities in the art world but how he persevered and continued to push his work despite this. (To those who know what I’m referring to….Whitten used his “developer” to make these blurred abstracted landscapes a full decade before Gerard Richter became famous for his squeegee paintings.)
Taking in every detail, layer, technique, reading, voice commentary, studio photographs, and scale and body of his work, I am left imprinted and forever changed as an artist and human being.
I am looking forward to returning to the studio in this new place with purpose and intention and in service as a messenger.
Thank you for encouraging me to take this trip, sharing in this experience, and for giving me the space and time I needed while allowing the deep conversations and reflections to unfold afterwards. I am so grateful for you. ❤️
