We are dedicated to exploring the visual and geographic globalization of contemporary Asian art and documenting artists' work that resonates with classical Asian philosophy, aesthetics, culture, with no limits on their expressive mediums. 🌺 𝗨𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌼

How do Chinese ink artists learn how to paint? In FQM’s AWNY exhibition for this fall, 𝘼 𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙍𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙚, 𝙖 𝙁𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙚: 𝙏𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙁𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙋𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜, we reconstruct a classroom through textual and material references given by the artworks to revive the traditional Chinese way of passing down artistic knowledge through generations. In a wide range of drawings and paintings, we present the 课 (lesson) and 谱 (lineage) that tie generations of artists together.

The exhibition centers on the flower paintings of Li Fenggong (1884-1967), a painter and an educator, who followed the traditional way of pedagogy through teacher’s demonstration, apprentice’s studies, and teacher’s annotation. Li and fellow apprentices’ lineage can be traced to the Changzhou School and Yangzhou School developed around the first half of the 18th century, and later passed and evolved to the Lingnan School of Li’s based Canton region in early 20th century.

🗺️ Over the past two years, Zhang Xiaoli Zhang Xiaoli’s move from China to Canada has quietly reshaped her artistic practice. New landscapes, changing seasons, and a different pace of life have all found their way into her work, inspiring series such as Three Realms, her LEGO-inspired landscapes, and her recent explorations with AI.

🎬 In this short film, Zhang reflects on migration, memory, home, and the ways a new environment can influence how we see and create.

🤖🌿 What is the role of creative labor in the age of artificial intelligence?

In her latest AI series, Zhang Xiaoli approaches this question through experimentation rather than certainty. Working with Midjourney, she uploads her own paintings and prompts, allowing the AI to generate image proposals. She then selects, edits, collages, and reconstructs these outputs, often incorporating elements from her earlier works.

The resulting images feel both familiar and unexpected. Landscapes, plants, and celestial forms—recurring subjects in Zhang’s practice—coexist with geometric structures and visual decisions that emerge from the AI’s interpretation of her artistic language.

Rather than celebrating or fearing AI, Zhang treats it as a creative partner. By making the dialogue between human and machine visible, she invites us to rethink authorship, creativity, and artistic possibility in an AI-driven world.

🛶 Shen Zhou’s album leaves record scenes encountered during his travels along the Grand Canal — rivers opening into quiet distances, temple compounds nestled among trees, boats drifting through misty waters. Each page feels like a small pause along the journey. 🌫️⛰️

For Zhang Xiaoli, these paintings became a starting point for translation. Using LEGO® bricks as her visual language, she reconstructs Shen Zhou’s mountains, architecture, trees, and figures into modular forms while preserving the rhythm and spatial flow of the original compositions. 🧱🌿

Rooflines stretch outward, paths wind through the image, clouds gather and dissolve. Rather than copying the paintings directly, the works move between two visual systems — ink and brick, softness and structure, tradition and play. ✨
