We are excited to share that today marks the start of Stanley Lewis's 2026 on-site instruction with Umbria Contemporary Arts!

In a special two-week course, Stanley's students will work in plein air painting sessions surrounded by the Umbrian countryside of Monte Castello di Vibio—which we can enjoy in the 2016 painting above—followed by critique in the studio.

Wishing Stanley and the class happy painting!

"Lees’s signature process seems perfectly in tune with the subject of his paintings. By repeatedly returning to the same motif, and by building up as well as sanding down the painting’s surface, Lees attempts the impossible, which is to freeze a particular object, individual, or moment in time." - John Yau for Hyperallergic, 2021

"In her series of landscapes, with an emphasis on seascapes painted over past several decades, Enders displays a unique balance of the descriptive and of the imaginary. The essential parts of the particular site in nature, such as the horizon line or a color hue characteristic of a certain area of the coast, are always fully acknowledged. It is through the elimination of all nonessential details that the artist transforms these locales into universal statements about the mysterious beauty of the coastal areas." - The Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 2009

"The artist largely eschews preparatory drawings, though she will frequently refer to her sculptures on paper after the fact. 'Heat 1' and 'Heat 3' (both 1981) are abstract charcoal drawings of forms that are distinctly reminiscent of the sculpture [...] The scratchy nature of her marks on paper likewise echo the distinct human traces that distinguish her three-dimensional pieces." - Jessica Holmes on Mia Westerlund Roosen the BrooklynRail, 2026

"After two wonderful years at 41 Union Square West #923, I will be taking the next step towards retirement by transitioning the gallery to fully remote operations beginning May 1, 2026.

We will continue to handle sales and inquires as usual; however, my focus will shift to assisting the artists that I have represented for many years with exhibition planning and, gradually, finding new representation.
Feel free to contact us directly via email at [email protected] as always. I look forward the flexibility and new opportunities this structure brings – for myself and the artists." - B.C.

High on the wall of his studio, Jake wrote his mantra:

"We may climb into the thin and cold realm of pure geometry and the lifeless science or sink into that of sensation. Between these extremes is the equator of life, of thought, of spirit, of poetry – a narrow belt." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"There is one thing I think realism is definitely not, though it is often confused with it, and that is a technique. Technique is a skill you can learn so you don’t have to respond to what you are looking at, you don’t have to be inquisitive about it. If something is real to you, the question becomes, not 'How do I do that', but 'What is this phenomenon I’m perceiving?'" -Rackstraw Downes
