Dan Simmons was one of those rare writers who expanded what I thought storytelling could be. The Hyperion Cantos — its structure, mythic scope, and deeply human core — had a real influence on my own work and the way I approach worldbuilding and long-form narrative. He showed that science fiction and horror could carry philosophical weight without losing their sense of wonder or dread. In the few exchanges we had, he struck me as thoughtful, articulate, and generous with his time — the kind of writer who respected both the craft and the reader.

Late in his career, people tried to pigeonhole him, to reduce a complex, contrarian thinker to a political label. That always felt like a disservice. Simmons never wrote to please a tribe; he wrote to ask hard questions and explore uncomfortable truths. Whether you agreed with him or not, his work had teeth — and integrity. The genre is smaller without his voice, but his influence will keep echoing through the stories he helped make possible.
