| The Seasons by Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) from Gallery 19C

Mucha’s first design for a decorative ensemble of artistic lithographs, The Seasons— created in 1896— remains one of the artist’s most recognizable pieces from La Belle Époque.

Comprised of Automne, Hiver, Printemps, and Été, the four nymph-like figures are characteristically posed within their seasonal settings, while also embodying the associated temperament of each stage. Autumn is fruitful and abundant, Winter is frosty and reclusive, Spring is innocent and fair, and Summer is sultry and beguiling.

This past weekend, we bid Printemps farewell and welcomed Été with open arms.

In this week’s “Country Life,” writer and art advisor Patrick Monahan explores how “Exquisite craftsmanship, sustainability, and the human stories behind each piece” are drawing a new generation of American collectors to antique English furniture.

Nowadays, “there is a growing emphasis on context and storytelling….” Dealers like Patrick Bavasi, an exhibitor at The Winter Show, are thoughtful about placement and juxtaposition, passionately embracing the dialogue between historic pieces and contemporary works.

Bunny Williams, a past Design Council Co-Chair and founder of Williams Lawrence, agrees. Williams and her business partner, Elizabeth Lawrence, believe that traditional forms are given new life when introduced into modern settings. With new perspectives, discoveries are boundless.

| Crown Heights Home by The Brownstone Boys

Built in 1892, this Romanesque Revival row house is four stories-worth of intricately carved millwork, stunning stained glass windows, and Gilded Age grandeur.

Jordan Slocum and Barry Bordelon— collectively known as the Brownstone Boys— prioritized preservation during the redesign, incorporating modern luxuries and fresh perspectives into the timeless structure.

In the sitting room, a Maxwell sofa by Interior Define and Pick of the Litter by Valspar soften the space— warming original hardwood details and bringing out amber and honey hues.

| Banded Navajo Rug (c. 1900) from Peter Pap Rugs

Peter Pap of Peter Pap Rugs is exhibiting an exceptional array of Navajo textiles from the personal collection of artist Frank Stella. After a debut show in New York City, the series will be moving to Dublin, New Hampshire for its final presentation.

This piece features a traditional banded design; Diné weavers often used the pattern for trade and sale. The motif was especially popular during the Hubbell Revival— a movement between 1890 and 1910 that saw a return to traditional Navajo weaving practices.

The series reveals an individualistic approach to Stella’s acquisitions and reflects his dedication to personal aesthetics over broader collecting benchmarks.

| Upper East Side Home by Charlotte Moss & Co.

With designs heavily influenced by her love of history, travel, and Southern hospitality, Charlotte Moss (a former Winter Show Design Council Co-Chair) is a designer renowned for her sophisticated eye and timeless taste.

In this Upper East Side home, the soft edges of the past meet modern day through rich wood grains, lush upholsteries, and eclectic antiques.

In the study, artwork is hung salon-style on Victoria fabric from Quadrille Fabrics. The antique caned armchair is upholstered in Jasper fabric Dahlia, in Daybreak, from Michael Smith Inc. With a multitude of textures and materials— such as tortoiseshell, gilt bronze, and wool— Moss’ design reminds one of a Grand Tour.

| American Gold and Diamond Butterfly Brooch from James Robinson, Inc.

Reminiscent of the late Victorian period, this imaginative brooch incorporates a selection of diamonds and rubies to create a naturalistic perch for a butterfly— the latter formed from a brilliant blue sapphire and pearl.

While indicative of the late 19th-century, the preference towards insects and floral motifs also overlaps with Art Nouveau aesthetics of the early 20th-century.

The use of yellow gold provides richness and warmth, while also contrasting and complimenting the precious stones.

| Pasadena Home by Reath Design Studio

A wellspring of immersive interiors and narrative designs, Reath Design Studio bridged fantasy and reality to reimagine this 1906 Tudor home in Pasadena, CA.

Once the stables for a much larger estate, maintaining and embracing the home’s history was an important priority for both the owners and designer.

In the living room, earthy palettes— Benjamin Moore’s Soul Mate— original woodwork, and handcrafted folk art communicate the desired ‘old country house’ aesthetic. A grand piano, used by Helberg, is poised to play in the corner.

| Grand Canyon of the Colorado by Samuel Colman from Thomas Colville Fine Art

Officially titled ‘Solomon’s Temple, Grand Canyon of the Colorado’ (c. 1888), this watercolor painting depicts a specific geographical summit located in the American Southwest.

Born and raised on the East Coast, Colman— a painter, designer, and writer— is best known for his depictions of the Hudson River and was heavily influenced by the prolific Hudson River School.

During his tenure as a designer, he worked closely with Louis Comfort Tiffany. The two collaborated on the homes of several prominent New York City socialites, including the Fifth Avenue manor of Henry and Louisine Havemeyer.

| Hill Farm by Ellen Hamilton

Located in rural Connecticut, this home— designed by New York-based decorator Ellen Hamilton— is an homage to tradition and modernity, alike.

With rustic oak-lined walls and artfully distressed architectural details, such as aged beams and antique Belgian tiles, the space offers a timeless stage for the owner’s collection of contemporary art.

In the living room, three vintage chairs by Swedish designer Arne Norell are joined by a custom crafted cocktail table by metalsmith David DeSantis.
