It was just shy of four years ago that I joined some creative minds to start an event in the LES on Ave A. The party was called FEMME, its home was Club Cu***ng and it is has been Grasshopper and I’s baby.
FEMME was reaction to the times and a social commentary on what was currently going on in NYC nightlife. While it is hard to believe with how progressive the current state of nightlife is, at the time there was a void of events where Q***r people could come exactly as they are and express themselves freely. Especially in Manhattan, events and bars were filled with countless six-packs, hyper-masculinity, and while androgyny was nothing new, it was a feat to find a welcoming space for queerdos outside of Brooklyn and even more so on a weekly basis in an intimate venue. We wanted to change that. We wanted to create a space where the effeminate were celebrated and elevated! We wanted to invest in our performers and showcase more women, more POC, MORE WEIRD! We wanted people to dance to music that they couldn’t hear anywhere else. We wanted folks in looks, rocking fishnets and heels, making out and chiseling memories into their brain, even if they may have been a little fuzzy the next day. We wanted to create a creative, fun and safe place for the community… and ya know what. WE DID ALL OF THOSE THINGS!!!
Looking back over years, my heart is so full with everything that Grasshopper, myself and so many extraordinary creatures of the night put out into the world. Thank you Club Cu***ng and your INCREDIBLE staff for believing in the “Little Party That Could” and giving us space and a place every week! If there is one thing that the past two years has taught us is that we have to listen to our hearts and be rigorously honest with ourselves.
That being said, FEMME will be going hiatus for the foreseeable future after October. Our last party will be Oct 28th.
This isn’t “Goodbye” by any means. We will see you soon!
Again, thank you for all the memories and come have one last twirl next Thursday!
Xoxo,
MG & Grasshopper
