Meet the Maestras of our September 17th Concert at ASF + Scandinavia House: Simona Smirnova Simona Smirnova performing with Alec Hutson Alec Hutson !

Simona Smirnova is a Lithuanian born vocalist, composer and kanklės player based in New York City. A global ambassador for the Lithuanian national instrument kanklės, she is currently the only professional kanklės player in the United States, as well as a published composer, touring artist, and teacher.

Simona has released 4 albums of her original music, published a sheet music book of her original compositions for kanklės, she is a voting member of Grammy Recording Academy and recently launched her own signature instrument line “Kanklės in New York”, that features her own designed instruments that are available for sale across the world.

In the September 17th concert at Scandinavia House, Simona will be performing her newest work "Nekirsk" with her life partner, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader Alec Hutson. The new single, written and recorded by Smirnova and Hutson, was recorded with Dolby Atmos Immersive Audio technology and is about connecting with trees and respecting the forest. "Nekirsk" is Lithuanian for "Do not cut".

Meet the Maestras of our September 17th Concert at ASF + Scandinavia House: Rasa Vitkauskaite Rasa Vitkauskaite 🎹

Rasa Vitkauskaite is an internationally acclaimed multiple prize-winning Lithuanian pianist, hailed for “artistry of poetic and observant sensitivity” (Gramophone) and dubbed as “a Beethoven interpreter of penetrating insight” (Fanfare).

Recently invited to join the prestigious Steinway Artist roster, Rasa has performed in over 30 countries. She is the long-serving, critically acclaimed pianist of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, and a voting member of the Recording Academy.

Her new work, “Bridgetower Project”, for which she is the producer and pianist, just debuted at #6 on Billboard’s Traditional Classical Albums chart, making her the highest-charting Lithuanian female pianist in Billboard history.

In the September 17th concert at Scandinavia House Rasa opens the performance with two preludes by Lithuanian composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, celebrating her Baltic heritage and Lithuania's rich musical tradition. 🇱🇹

She is then joined by world-renowned clarinetist Jonathan Cohler to present selections from the “Bridgetower Project”, an interdisciplinary collaboration with former U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner Rita Dove that celebrates the legacy of Afro-European violin virtuoso George Bridgetower. The program features music by Florence Price, the first Black woman to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra, and Cuban composer and multi-Grammy winner Paquito D'Rivera.
