With its architectural landmark building in Midtown Manhattan the Austrian Cultural Forum New York is the cultural embassy of Austria in the United States. It hosts more than 200 free events annually and showcases Austrian contemporary art, music, literature, and academic thought in New York. The Austrian Cultural Forum enjoys long-standing and flourishing partnerships with many venerable cultural and academic institutions throughout New York and the United States.

Discover the cinematic work of Valie Export (1940–2026), one of Austria’s most influential avant-garde artists. Working across performance, photography, installation, video, and “expanded cinema,” Export challenged conventions surrounding sexuality, spectatorship, and the structures of power that shape them.

Following her death in May 2026, this two-day program offers a rare opportunity to experience her narrative features and experimental shorts on the big screen.

Discover "Imprints of Becoming: Traces, Temporalities and Unfixed Paradise", a group exhibition including Austrian artist , exploring transformation through time, matter, memory, environment, and human encounter.

Bringing together photography, sculpture, sound, performance, and installation, the exhibition considers landscapes - natural, cultural, corporeal, and cosmic - as sites that continuously register traces of presence, loss, and change. Rather than imagining paradise as a fixed or recoverable place, "Imprints of Becoming" proposes it as an evolving, relational condition.

The eleven etudes at the heart of the program began as practice exercises before evolving into fully realized pieces, with titles including “Pedal,” “Tremelo,” “Vamp,” “Schildehen,” and “Melting Notes.”

The program also features Muthspiel’s improvisational take on a sarabande by Johann Sebastian Bach, Paul Motian’s contemplative Abacus, and For Bill Evans, a tribute to the influential jazz pianist. Together, these works showcase Muthspiel’s distinctive dialogue between classical and jazz traditions.

Following its presentation at Limbo Museum in Accra, Ghana, Limbo Engawa arrives at Art Omi as a freestanding landscape pavilion, transforming modular architectural elements into a shaded space for gathering, encounter, and exchange.

The two-part installation explores how architecture can activate unfinished and overlooked spaces, foregrounding ideas of care, labor, and community while adapting to different climates, scales, and cultural contexts.

The project is presented through a partnership between Limbo Museum and Art Omi, with support provided in part by the Austrian Cultural Forum in Accra ().

Join us for the finissage of "Architecture of Connection" and a panel discussion exploring the future of our cities and the responsibilities of architecture beyond the boundaries of the building itself.

Architect Dietmar Feichtinger (.architectes) and Molly Hare, Director of Interior Design at Rafael Viñoly Architects (), will discuss public space and infrastructure, landscape, climate, and the people who shape and inhabit our cities. Drawing on their respective practices, they will explore how architecture can respond to the interconnected challenges facing the built environment; and how sustainability can be understood not only through environmental performance, but also through architecture’s lasting value for people and place.

The evening will feature presentations by Feichtinger and Hare, followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. Stephanie Buhmann, Head of Visual Arts, Architecture, and Design at the ACFNY. An open Q&A and reception will follow.

An evening of theater, democracy, and international dialogue 🎭✨

Yesterday, we welcomed scholars and artists from Austria, Japan, Poland, and the United States to the Austrian Cultural Forum New York for "Elfriede Jelinek Day: Theater & Democracy", celebrating the Austrian Nobel Prize laureate on the occasion of her 80th birthday.

Through conversations, performances, video statements, and artistic presentations, the program explored theater as a space for democratic dialogue, artistic resistance, and feminist intervention. Discussions ranged from gender and democracy on stage and women shaping democratic structures through performance to the role of comedy and subversion in contemporary theater.

The evening also featured a special focus on *Monster’s Paradise*, the new opera by Elfriede Jelinek and Olga Neuwirth, including a video conversation on its world premiere at the Hamburg State Opera.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this thought-provoking evening, and to all the scholars and artists who contributed their perspectives to this international dialogue on Jelinek, theater, and democracy.

Experience two landmark works by Austrian composers Franz Joseph Haydn and German composer Ludwig van Beethoven in a program exploring a turning point in classical music.

Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, written in 1798 as Napoleon’s forces threatened Europe and Haydn’s native Austria, opens the evening. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C Major follows, marking the beginning of a new musical path with its unexpected harmonic shifts and striking sforzandi accents.

The performance features Bolivian soprano Shelén Hughes Camacho, a winner of the 2025 George and Nora London Foundation Competition, making her American Classical Orchestra (ACO) debut, together with the ACO Chorus.
