Meet our photographers: John Custodio: John, who currently has a show on view at our gallery, has been a photographer for over 40 years, and a part of our collective for many years as well. His primary focus is landscape; often unusual aspects of the landscape (as you’ll see in the fun body of work he has up now). Here he answers our questions...
🔴 Soho Photo Gallery: What would you like people to know about you or your work
🔵 John Custodio: I photograph with a digital camera, and process and print my images using digital techniques. This gives me creative freedom over how I want the images to look.
🔴 SPG: What or who has been your biggest inspiration?
🔵 JC: My biggest inspiration is the landscape, especially the vast lands of the midwestern and western United States.
🔴 SPG: What is the process/technique you used for this body of work?
🔵 JC: This body of work is essentially an extension of my On the Road: Structures series. For many years I’ve been traveling to different parts of the United States photographing landscapes, and among those images would occasionally be a scene containing an architectural or other man-made element. Many of the places I’ve visited are in vast, open spaces, and I found myself drawn to the solitary structure — sometimes standing in the middle of nowhere, isolated within the landscape. This current exhibit features a variety of dinosaur statues I’ve come across — not fossils, but man-made creations appearing as roadside attractions or exhibits in dinosaur parks. Some are comical interpretations of different species, while others, built decades ago, reflect earlier conceptions of how dinosaurs looked.
🔴 SPG: What does photography mean to you?
🔵 JC: It keeps me busy and serves as a creative outlet.
