Please join us in welcoming Wendell Pierce to The Classical Theatre of Harlem’s Board of Directors!

Widely recognized for his acclaimed performances in The Wire, Treme, Elsbeth, Jack Ryan, Suits, and numerous stage productions, including the 2022 Broadway production of Death of a Salesman in which he starred as the iconic “Willy Loman” and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actor, Pierce has built a distinguished career that spans television, film, and theater while remaining deeply committed to strengthening communities through the arts, education, and economic development.

We were proud to join NABJ for a conversation about Black theatre, arts journalism, and the vital role storytelling plays in shaping how our communities are seen, understood, and remembered.

A special thank you to Stephen McKinley Henderson for joining us, to moderators Kathy McGee and Venton Blandin for guiding such a thoughtful conversation, and to our publicists and Navalta Media for helping bring it all together.

CTH is headed to Atlanta for the 2026 NABJ Convention!

Acclaimed actor Stephen McKinley Henderson will be taking the stage alongside CTH Producing Artistic Director Ty Jones, Associate Artistic Director Carl Cofield, and Managing Director Chris Berry, for “Covering Black Theater: The Stories We Don’t Always Get to Tell,” a conversation exploring how Black theater is covered, whose stories reach wider audiences, and the essential role journalism plays in documenting our work and cultural legacy.

Presented by the NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force, the panel will be co-moderated by veteran theater journalist and Emmy Award-winning WCBS-TV writer/producer Kathy McGee and NABJ Arts & Entertainment Task Force Chair and Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Award winner Venton Blandin.

Paul Smith.
Paul was extremely dedicated to CTH and our audiences, for many years. As head of security, his contribution to the success of our UPTOWN Shakespeare in the Park productions cannot be overstated. He never missed a day in 14 yrs.

He shared with me the responsibility of making sure that up to 3000 people left Marcus Garvey Park safely. Knowing full well that if something were to happen without an appropriate response, it would give those who carry the legacy of Robert Moses at New York City Department of Parks & Recreation an excuse to try and culturally erase our engagement with the community of Harlem and beyond.

Paul didn’t carry anything lethal; he was skilled in self-defense but most importantly, he knew how to talk to people. He knew that everything didn’t need to be answered with the strong hand of the law. Some may view some of his tactics as petty, but I give you my word it was about protection. Paul was a man of few words, until he wasn’t — but I take solace knowing that he will be quietly watching over all of us as a temple of safety.

To his family - Paul Smith will certainly be missed.

Well… that record lasted one night.

After nearly 3,000 people joined us on Friday, more than 3,000 filled Marcus Garvey Park the very next evening for Othello—breaking our biggest-night-ever record all over again.

Last night, nearly 3,000 people filled Marcus Garvey Park for Othello—our biggest night ever in the history of Uptown Shakespeare in the Park.

To everyone who joined us, brought a friend, shared a seat or stood to watch and made the park feel alive: thank you. This is what free theatre, made for and with our community, can be.

Harlem, you showed up with extraordinary love. We will never forget it.
