in 1941, Emmett Till was born.

To honor his legacy, we're spotlighting The Till Trilogy—Ifa Bayeza's three-play cycle exploring the epic saga of Emmett Till and the birth of the modern Civil Rights Movement.

🕯️ THE BALLAD OF EMMETT TILL dramatizes the final days of Emmett Till, a Chicago teenager who takes a fateful trip to Mississippi in the summer of 1955. It is the story of a quest, Emmett's pursuit of happiness, of liberty and ultimately of life.

⚖️ THAT SUMMER IN SUMNER is the middle drama in The Till Trilogy, exploring the 1955 trial of Emmett's killers through the eyes of three African American journalists covering the trial—and Emmett himself, coming to grips with what has happened to him.

🕊️ BENEVOLENCE, the third play in the trilogy, explores the impact of Emmett's murder on two families in the Mississippi Delta—one white, one Black—grappling with the enduring legacy of American racial violence through an intimate story of love and redemption.

Set in 1974, IN THE UPPER ROOM introduces a multi-generational Black family living under one roof—and at the center of it all is Rose, a strong-willed matriarch whose superstitions and secrets keep the whole household on edge.

Through sharp wit, playful sarcasm, and stories passed down from the family elders, the Berrys confront questions of hierarchy, heritage, and identity — with tender, comedic moments woven right alongside real family drama. Loyalty, spirituality, and colorism all collide in this dramatic dark comedy from playwright Beaufield Berry, drawn directly from her own family's history.
