This week we'd like to give a shoutout to last season's featured composer, Theo Chandler!

A brilliant and accomplished young musician, Theo has continued to be highly sought after since our NY Premiere of his Oboe Concerto at Alice Tully Hall on April 27th, 2024. His most recent successes include the completion of a new work for string trio + narrator, commissioned by MUSIQA. The new piece reflects on the history of the Vietnamese community in Houston's midtown district and incorporates the words of a local Vietnamese-American poet. Theo was also awarded a Houston Arts Alliance Grant for a production of his chamber opera "So You May Breathe In Light", set to premiere at MATCH on May 13th.

For a glimpse into his fascinating musical approach, check out our interview between Theo and Artistic Director, Anthony Korf on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Y7Stvkolui4?si=q26faFshhV2AfztM

We'll be posting a new interview in just a few weeks, this time with the featured composer of our next concert, Gregg August.

This week’s installment of Composer’s Corner explores Haydn’s Symphony No. 2 in C Major!

A late addition to our June 5 program, this exquisite, albeit rarely performed Haydn symphony, only the second of the 104-work set, shows the young composer (he was only 25) already at the top of his game! Typical of the earliest classicists (C.P.E. Bach et al), this work is set in three movements, unlike the four-movement #80, which will conclude the concert. Heard here, movement two (for strings only) features a “forever melody”, a notable inheritance from everybody’s “daddy”, J.S. Bach. The outer movements include woodwinds, in this excellent performance by Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music utilizing early instruments, including valveless horns. We’re looking forward to how Maestro Rothman might introduce this ancient sound into a modern orchestra performance. (© Anthony Korf 2025)
