Drawing on the cultural traditions of his native Korea, Suh reuses discarded calligraphy scrolls and ink paintings made on Korean Hanji paper. He compresses, rolls, and hand-cuts these painted fragments before assembling them into intricate relief compositions, often using geometric forms to evoke a sense of timeless universality.
Reminiscent of mandalas, Suh’s works reveal a mesmerizing harmony from afar, while closer inspection exposes layers of complexity and disorder. Faint ink marks visible along the cut edges connect past and present, reflecting the continuity of traditional Korean practices within contemporary culture.
