Iām not one to air my business out like this, but spotlighting the unfortunate underside of being a practicing artist and asking for just a morsel of accountability feelsā¦ needed.Ā
Personally, it is not so much about being paid on time or even this specific gallery (this scenario is not uncommon), but more about the opaqueness and deceit of what happens behind the scenes. That compounded with not being afforded the common decency of a timely (or any) response really underscores how insignificant it can feel as an artist in an art world that is literally built on the hard and sincere work of artists.
This experience came with the initial highs of showing and selling work in a true LA art happening and working alongside fellow talented artists/friends. But in retrospect, taking part in the 99 Cent takeover show lowkey felt like being an unwitting participant in an art Ponzi scheme (albeit a very fun one).Ā
Shout out and no shade to any of the participating artists and organizers who did not have any knowledge into whatever that is happening at The Hole (has a gallery name ever been so apropos). And all praise to galleries that actually take care of the artists they show and represent.
