Wonderland by Kate Douglas is TWO DAYS AWAY!!!!! Join us to hear this singular and amazing play at 7pm on Wednesday 2/20, Book Culture on 112th. Meet the awesome actors who will be reading:

Kana Hatakeyama, Bryn Carter, and Stephanie Jean Lane

Kana Hatakeyama is a Japanese-American filmmaker and actor based in NYC. Her short film "okaasan (mom)" marks her directorial debut. As an actor, she has performed in critically-acclaimed plays in NYC and around the country, as well as in the Emmy Award-recognized Netflix shows "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and "Orange is the New Black," the latter in a recurring role in its recently released sixth season. Film credits include "Split" and "Tape" (upcoming) directed by Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominee Deborah Kampmeier. Kana grew up in both Japan and the United States, and has also spent time living in France, Argentina and Kenya. She is a graduate of Duke University.

Bryn Carter is a Brooklyn-based actress originally from Chicagoland and Northern Arizona. She is excited to be a small part of the development of Kate’s newest play. Most recently Bryn was in the sold-out production of Scraps at The Flea Theater. Other Off-Broadway credits include: White Wines (Target Margin), Asking for Trouble (EST), Macbeth (Gallery Players), Serials (The Flea). Film and web credits include the feature film Milkwater as well as Eavesdropping and Admins (web series) and online content for Elite Daily, Marabigo, and Physical Plant. Bryn is also a producer and will co-produce and star in Opening Night, a new short film. Bryn received her BA in Theater from NYU/Tisch. Follow her IG and FB Bryn Carter

Stephanie Jean Lane currently performs as mama witch Hecate in the cast of Sleep No More. She has worked on TV (Elementary), film (Dish), and theater (Lincoln Center Theater, Elm Shakespeare, 52nd Street Project). She teaches acting at New York Film Academy, and her original plays and dance theater work have been performed at NYU Graduate Acting, La MaMa ETC, Dixon Place, and The Brick. She danced professionally for Jenny Rocha & her Painted Ladies and Ani Javian. MFA - NYU Graduate Acting.

Do you want to talk about movie stars and the end of the world?

Come to the debut reading of "Wonderland" by Kate Douglas, Wednesday, February 20th at 7 pm.

"Wonderland" is a story of non-imaginary people populating an imaginary town. Wonderland is a staged suburb built to conceal a World War Two fighter jet factory in case the Japanese bombers fly over. Three actresses have been hired to live ordinarily as townspeople as a finishing touch. But World War Two never ends, and the summer job stretches on forever. "Wonderland" questions the meaning of authenticity and denial in a manufactured world where imminent doom is possible in every moment.

We're back, we have an incredible playwright, come see her work at the next event on Wednesday, February 20th at 7pm.

Kate Douglas is a multidisciplinary theatre artist seeking to challenge audiences about the limits of their world. Her work has been performed at Ars Nova, Joe’s Pub and The McKittrick Hotel and developed at SPACE on Ryder Farm, Rhinebeck Musicals, Turkey Land Cove Foundation, The National Theater Institute, the Writer’s Colony at Goodspeed, Artemisia Theatre and HERE Arts Center. She is the recipient of a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council grant in support of her immersive work Extinct, which debuted in winter 2018. Her piece Middlemist Red is currently in development as part of New Victory LabWorks 2018-2019 season. Additional upcoming projects include co-writes with Todd Almond, Matthew Marsh and Grace McLean. In winter 2019, she will be in residence with Letter of Marque’s Ensemble Playwright Lab in Brooklyn. As a complement to her artistic practice, she studied herbalism at the Gaia School of Healing in Vermont and last fall, she began her Master Naturalist training at Cornell University.

Meet our latest and wonderful playwright. UPS's Reading of his play "Ravenous", Friday, November 2nd, 2018

Philip Kenner is an NYC-based playwright and performer, and his plays include Hades & Gehenna, The Woods Decay, Ravenous, Upstairs at the Christmas Party, Defense Mode, and The Sun Club. Philip's plays have been produced by Playwrights Downtown and have had readings with the CRY HAVOC company, Tisch School of the Arts, and the Jermyn Street Theatre in London. Three of Philip’s short plays have been published in CRY HAVOC’s HAVOC for the Holidays series, and he wrote the book for the musical All the Junk in the Whole Wide World and the Kids Who Sort Through It which was produced by Playwrights Downtown in conjunction with Musical Theater Factory. Philip is the recipient of the Bevya Rosten Memorial Award and an alumni apprentice with the CRY HAVOC Company. Philip recently graduated with a BFA in Drama & English Literature from NYU Tisch (PHTS), and he is incredibly excited to be a part of Book Culture's Upstairs Reading Series!

My name is Madeline Pages (Maddie), I’m a Co-Producer of The Upstairs Play Series, and here’s a little bit about me (be gentle):

I did not move to New York to make theatre. In fact, when I was preparing to start college at Barnard in 2013, I had decided that I would stop doing theatre full-stop and focus all my energy on writing mediocre poetry and trying to get a job in publishing. I decided that I would move to New York by the time I was 5; that I would dedicate my life to writing by time I was 7; that I would go to Barnard by age 10; that I would study English Literature (and study abroad in Spain) by the time I was a freshman in high school. When it comes to precocious proclamations, I have always followed through. Almost. Thankfully, to abandon all my aspirations to make theatre is the only major decision that fell through the cracks. In fact, I have done nothing BUT theatre since I moved to New York (and ended up writing my thesis on Jean Genet, who is to this day one of my favorite playwrights).

I graduated from Barnard in 2017. Now I find myself proclaiming that I am a dramaturg, and dreaming of someday running my own theatre company. I have worked in theatres all over New York City, and I am happy to call La Mama Experimental Theatre Club home (after Book Culture, of course). Working at La Mama is an education in New York theatre history, and the company’s long-standing tradition of championing new and experimental theatre has inspired my interest in working with playwrights to develop their work. There is nothing more exciting to me than a new script--a new play--and I hope to share that excitement through The Upstairs Play Series.

My name is Emily, I'm a Co-Producer of The Upstairs Play Series, and so that you don't feel like you are submitting to a faceless internet void, Maddie and I decided to tell you guys a little bit about ourselves. (And here is a picture of me to further humanize this for you!!)

I graduated from NYU Tisch Drama in 2016. I studied at the Stella Adler Studio, and abroad in London. I had an internship at Penguin Random House reading manuscripts for their film studio and writing coverage, which immersed me in the book world in a more professional capacity than "reading a lot", which is what led me to Book Culture. I've been a bookseller at Book Culture and a real life actor ever since summer 2016. You can come to me for any recommendations on contemporary Irish female authors, or if you'd like to read a book in which women are being angry and weird. I'm also currently an intern at Jean Doumanian Productions, mainly writing coverage, so a lot of reading all around, scripts and books. I always felt like finding good work to be a part of was out of my hands in many ways (especially as an actor), and I was very frustrated that I didn't have a way of producing and promoting work that I believe is deserving of attention, particularly when I see mediocre stuff getting plenty of opportunity.

I'm very excited to be creating a platform to give opportunities to very talented people. This bookstore, which in a way possesses all the information in the world, is such a perfect venue, saturated with truth. I feel that Diane di Prima would be into it, and Diane is the only person I'm ever trying to impress. (Hear that Diane?!?! Please Come!!) So, if this sounds like something you want to be a part of, SUBMIT, REFER PEOPLE, COME to our opening event! There is a lot of emptiness in this business of theater, and I hope this series will be a fulfilling antidote. (The Call for Submissions is our event below!)
