Artis is delighted to welcome the 14 artists selected to participate in international residencies through our inaugural Residency Partnership Initiative. Organized in collaboration with six residencies worldwide, the Residency Partnership Initiative offers fully funded residencies to emerging, mid-career, and established visual artists from Israel. Artists in residence were selected through a competitive open call and review process, and were identified for their commitment to their practice and dialogic engagement with timely questions. Their practices explore complex political histories and experiences of migration and diaspora, climate, conflict, mythology, technologies, and the impacts of capitalism, among other critical and universal themes.

Artis is pleased to launch a new initiative that deepens our work with residencies worldwide and bolsters professional networks for artists. In this challenging time, we are committed to creating artist-centered opportunities for dialogue and exchange, and to opening up possibilities for conversations in shared spaces.

Artis’ Residency Partnership Initiative is a two year program that expands partnerships with residency institutions worldwide to forge fully funded residency opportunities for contemporary artists from Israel. Emerging, mid-career, and established visual artists from Israel, who may be living anywhere in the world, are invited to submit a Letter of Interest (LOI) to participate in a residency at one of Artis’ partner institutions in 2024 or 2025. The deadline for artists to apply is February 25, 2024. Residency lengths vary, ranging from 3 weeks to 6 months. The average residency length is 2 months. We are pleased to present Dancing on Tec(h)tonic Plates, a virtual video art screening program that is viewable on the Artis website from April through July, 2023. The program is organized by Artis in collaboration with Vivian Ostrovsky for the Ostrovsky Family Fund (O.F.F.) and Lea Mauas, Director of Mamuta Art and Research Center. A curated selection of video works will be released monthly for the run of the program. The screenings are organized into four thematic sections, offering reflections on, and reactions to, present environmental and political shifts and imbalance.

We invite you to view the first group of video works that are screening for the month of April, which explore notions of stillness and motion: The Wedding by Elham Rokni (2015), Naamah: A Tribute to Nahum Benari by Hilla Ben Ari (2015), Shama (There)//شامْ(ا)//שמה by Thalia Hoffman (2017), and Sleepers by Ruth Patir (2017).

Dancing on Tec(h)tonic Plates asks, how do contemporary artists confront the changing environment and climate crisis? What channels do they choose in their work to reflect on their realities, and project their fantasies? The featured works question the past, the present, the political, and the personal, and use a constantly evolving technology to express diverse viewpoints in form and subject.

Participating artists: Elham Rokni, Hilla Ben Ari, Thalia Hoffman, Ruth Patir, Haviv Kapzon, Ofri Cnaani, Tali Keren, and other artists to be announced.

The video works presented as part of this program are culled from a decade of the Experimental Cinema and Video Art Awards at the Jerusalem Film Festival and highlight works by artists who have recently received grant support from Artis.

"Texts from Lilit: 31 Cards to Connect to Your Inner Demon," a new artist book by artist Tamar Ettun is now available for purchase on the Artis website. The book, which is composed of 31 cards with art works and text printed in color, conjures the empathic demon Lilit (Lillith), whose story traces back to ancient Sumerian, Akkadian, and Judaic mythology. Reaching from the dark side of the moon, communicating via text messages, Lilit explores the insidious side of empathy, trauma-healing modalities, and astrology as storytelling.

The artist book is part of an ongoing project by Tamar titled Lilit, the empathic demon, through which you may text the word, “SUMMON” to Lilit at 833-575-1049 and correspond with her by text messages. Texts From Lilit: 31 Cards to Connect to Your Inner Demon was created by Tamar Ettun. Meghana Karnik is the book’s editor and contributor of curatorial text. The book was first printed in conjunction with the artist’s solo exhibition “Tamar Ettun: How To Trap A Demon,” curated by Meghana Karnik at SUNY Purchase's Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery from October 6 - November 16, 2022.

Artis welcomes curators and writers with curatorial experience to apply for a two month funded research residency at International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in Brooklyn, New York. This residency is part of the Artis Curatorial Residency Program and is intended for an enthusiastic and self-driven individual who is looking to expand the scope of a concrete research topic to include the work of contemporary artist(s) from Israel and related discourse. Mid-career or established curators or writers with curatorial experience may apply. Applicants must have experience working with contemporary visual artists in a curatorial capacity, including writing, research, educational programming, and exhibition-making, to be considered.

During the residency, the curator-in-residence will build contacts with arts professionals who are part of Artis’ community, while immersed in an international residency at ISCP, and develop a curatorial project informed by these experiences. The final curatorial project, which will be developed in close collaboration with Artis staff, may take the form of a publication, essay, exhibition, or public program, and will be shared publicly on the Artis website or other channels.

The participant will receive a private workspace at ISCP and participate in professional development opportunities that are part of ISCP’s residency program. The participant will receive an honorarium from Artis for their participation in the program, and limited travel grants are available to support round trip travel to New York. Artis welcomes emerging and established visual artists from Israel, who may be living anywhere in the world, to apply for a two-month funded residency opportunity at International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in Brooklyn, New York. The residency is an immersive experience into the art scene in New York. Committed and self-driven artists with at least two years of professional work experience will be considered. Artis prioritizes proposals from artists who have a clear vision for what they want to achieve during the residency, and who demonstrate the ways that they would benefit from making new contacts with arts professionals that are part of ISCP and Artis’ international communities.

The artist-in-residence will receive a private studio at ISCP and programming, including studio visits and other professional development opportunities. Artis will provide the participant with a monthly stipend to help offset living expenses, and limited travel grants are available to support round trip travel to New York.
