Artist Peggy Kennedy ‘s magnificent “Window at Balmoral” was temporarily installed to hide an enormous hole in the wall (from electrical rewiring) on our sun porch during the wildly successful Castine Historical Society House and Garden tour. This painting will soon take a prominent spot in our stand in a few weeks - IF it is still available - at the Downeast Art & Antiques Show opening August 12. The room itself retains the original 1920s painted ceiling and is one of the most elaborate spaces architecturally designed by William Bottomley. The floor was originally zenitherm tile like the entrance hall.

Why don’t you… tear up your driveway and front steps days before 1000 people are going to come through your house? So far, so good - fingers crossed that the next 48 hours, Mike and his Hardscrabble team bring Anthony Bellomo ‘s design to glory.

Headed back to Maine after a fabulous short work trip to the city! There is nothing more invigorating than diving into a new project. Meanwhile I do pine for my mammals and these were the latest photos/ proof of life Mr EEE sent along to get me through.

A classic decorative motif, seen through Cressida Bell unmistakable lens, “Bamboo” is Cressida Bell’s colorful interpretation of faux bamboo, hand-painted from base to shade in vibrant greens, yellow and black. Every design begins as a carefully scaled geometric drawing in her notebook before being painstakingly painted by hand, a meticulous process hidden beneath its joyful appearance. An effortless way to introduce pattern, color, and craftsmanship into a room.

While this room could be out of a David Lynch film, it is our client Eileen Kelly ‘s super moody and glam media room. Pink is really just a soft red so it makes perfect sense that she chose red to color drench the space. (We used one of my favorites Benjamin Moore Heritage Red here). Wishing everyone a happy Fourth of July may we all be as independent and bold in embracing our style as Eileen! 🧨✨

When we started working with on Slippers 🩰 mid-way through the project, this spectacular silver ground GRACIE hand-painted paper had already been selected. No notes! Eileen’s beloved cat Chichi, a pair of ballet slippers and flamingos were whimsically added to personalize it for her. As the living room is akin to a rich chocolate box, we wanted the dining room to feel airy and conservatory-like. Two faux orange trees in Versailles-style box planters flank one of the French doors. We commissioned the wonderful Garrison Lowell Rousseau to make the Brighton Pavilion style hand-caned turquoise-glazed bamboo chairs for us and to round out the fantasy, pagoda pelmets emphasize the arched line of the French doors and add whimsy. I find a little brown wood goes a long way, so we created a ruffled ballgown skirt from a silk over the mahogany table. And keeping in mind John Fowler’s adage of bringing in something humble to balance out the fancy, we love the chunky rush carpet from RUSH HOUSE

“I want it to look like pink threw up,” our client Eileen Kelly shared when describing her vision for her dream bedroom. No problem - why not?! 🎀And not just any pink. Armed with a tote bag of perfect pinks, Eileen show us examples of a happy cotton candy color - not too mauve or purple and not too dusty. Fresh and pretty. 🎀Everything from the satin to the 12 different shades in the Sheryl wallpaper (trompe l’oeil to look like tufting) was customized.

As the centerpiece of room, the bed had to be a showstopper. As a nod to 1930s glamour, we took a Syrie Maugham sleigh bed complete with attached box-pleated bed skirt designed for original bright young thing Stephen Tennant as our inspiration, spacing the tufts to sync with the wallpaper. I am not going to lie - satin is tricky to work with but it channels Jean Harlow old Hollywood glamour like nothing else. What I love about this room is you can’t put a date on it - it could be 1920s or 2020s. All the while being one of a kind, just like our client. 🎀

Photos by Stefan Ruiz for Vogue except for the last one which gives you a glimpse of the other side of the room.

The first time Kelly walked through the doors of the home she’s nicknamed Slippers, she could see her future with unsettling clarity: aqua walls in the entry, leopard carpet underfoot, a deep fuchsia living room peeking through an archway, and her bedroom awash in pink. She had rarely been so certain of anything. Together with interior designer Emily Eerdmans, Kelly embraced a fantasy of 1950s Hollywood glamour filtered through a 1920s lens. Head to the link in our bio to learn more about how Kelly transformed this Los Angeles fixer-upper into her whimsical, pattern-happy new home.
