*Gone are the days when it seemed that time, money, and resources for producing quality theatre were bountiful. There are fewer theatre companies than can afford to nurture the playwright with a family of actors and directors... Where you can watch a play grow and develop over a period of time... Where collaboration happens. It’s even less so for playwrights of col

*LTC has taken on the mission that: ”More works by Black playwrights need to be produced”. The Black voice colored by slavery and the Middle Passage, the Civil Rights movement, the age of O’Bama, throw in some Caribbean, Africa, Hispaña - this voice is rich and it’s vital. But let’s not just produce these voices, let’s provide a home base to be nurtured and a possibility for excellence in the work.
*Black playwrights, means more work for Black and White actors, directors, dramaturges...you name it!
*Besides the talented actors, directors, and dramaturges, there is the audience. Without an audience, there is no theatre. The audience is crucial to the learning process, starting with the first reading. So, LTC is committed to the dialog between the playwright and her audience. So come to LTC and be part of the nurturing of creative new voices!

Liberation Theatre Company is delighted to announce that we are the recipient of a "Pay Your People" grant from IndieSpace, awarded at their annual event, The Big Give, on Monday, December 2.

IndieSpace celebrates and centers independent theater-making in New York City. They provide radically transparent, responsive and equity-focused funding, real estate programs, professional development, and advocacy to individual artists, theater companies, and indie venues.

We are deeply honored to have received this grant and appreciative of the work IndieSpace does to benefit the community of small theatre companies.

TODAY IS GIVING TUESDAY!

Since 2009, Liberation Theatre Company has committed to supporting the development of emerging Black playwrights for the American theatre. We have achieved our success primarily by creating community with an ever-growing list of writers, dramaturgs, directors and actors, as well as friends, fans and supporters like you, who all believe in our mission.

On this Giving Tuesday, we are asking our community to stand with us. Your tax-deductible contribution will help ensure that Liberation Theatre Company continues to nurture playwrights, create transformative theatre, and maintain a vital platform for diverse perspectives in theatre. Together, we can ensure that these important voices continue to be heard, celebrated and supported.

As an Annual Donor, you can make a one-time gift in the amount of $10, $15, $25, $50, $100--or any amount you can give.

If you are able to give more, we invite you to join our Legacy Donor program, with a monthly pledge in the same amounts but with the increased benefit of a greater contribution by the end of the year: $10/mo = $120/yr, $15 = $180, $25 = $300, $50 = $600 and $100 = $1,200.

🎭 Breathing Life into Words: My Theatrical Journey Through NYC 🗽 As a SCAD professor and playwright, I recently had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in NYC's vibrant theater scene for two weeks. A presidential fellowship rekindled my passion and reminded me why I fell in love with theater in the first place.

Highlights of my theatrical feast:
• Chisa Hutchinson's "The Bleeding Class" at 59E59
• "N/A" and "SIX CHARACTERS" at Lincoln Center
• "SUFFS" and "MJ the Musical" on Broadway
• Harlem9's OBIE award-winning "48 Hours in...™ Harlem 2024" festival

Each show offered unique insights, from the raw energy of live performance to the power of diverse voices on stage. I also sat in on an enlightening discussion with fellow theater professionals about the challenges and triumphs of telling Black stories in today's theater world.

As I return to my classroom at SCAD, I carry not just memories, but a renewed sense of purpose. I am FULL!!!Theater is more than words on a page – it's a living, breathing entity that changes perspectives and inspires!

To my fellow NYC peeps and fellow enthusiasts: Seek out live theater. Let it move you, challenge you, and inspire you. In those darkened theaters, you might just discover your own voice waiting to be heard.
