Robert Duvall. Las Vegas, 1973.
Bobby Duvall was a wonderful guy. He was also a very gifted actor. I worked on 3 films with him. Badge 373, The Conversation and The Natural. He was terrific to hang out with off camera. He loved sports especially boxing. He played tennis really well. He didn’t drink or smoke. But he was not a stuffy person just a down to earth guy with a great laugh. He was fun. Never wore his talent on his sleeve as many do. And this guy could do a tango like a professional. Early in his acting life his roommates were Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman. I was fortunate enough to work with all three of these terrific guys.
I will miss Bobby Duvall a lot.
Bobby Duvall most certainly had a great life.

Alec Baldwin and I having a catch up conversation at MSG as we enjoyed watching the Knicks win over the Clippers this past Wednesday. Enjoying our decades old friendship by chatting about family and how kids cut to the truth in a humorous uncensored way. Although we share the same politics we didn’t touch upon any of those thoughts on this fun night. Bragging about kids and grandkids always makes everything else take a backseat.

Diane Keaton is best known for her diverse acting talent. She won a best actress Academy Award for her performance in Annie Hall pictured here. And has been given clusters of awards since. I had the privilege of photographing her many times on many motion pictures starting in 1976. She is a very nice person who always provoked me to smile just by entering a room with her own lovely smile. She is truly a genuine original character. She has many talents in addition to acting chops including her superlative work as a photographer. She is also a director, producer, fashion style-setter and a dedicated Mom. The world would improve with more human beings like her. NYC, 1976. -

Happy Birthday Mike!
I met Mike Tyson when he was 15 years old. We were introduced by the legendary boxing guru, Cus D’Amato, in the boxing gym he ran in Catskill, NY. Tyson has been my friend since that day.

Many years earlier Cus had been my boxing teacher. I met Cus when I was 13 years old in The Gramercy Gym on E. 14th which he owned. He had managed/taught three world champions: Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres, and Mike Tyson. We had a life long friendship. He was a special man. He did not stay alive long enough, Cus died in 1985, to witness Mike win the Heavyweight Title in November of 1986. Tyson remained the youngest heavyweight to win a title at 20 years old.

This is not a post to praise Mike for his great career as a gifted boxer. This is my birthday wish to a man who not only had extraordinary skills and success but a man who has had tremendous struggle and loss too. He has pulled himself out of the depths of despair. He had grown from being a wild street guy to being a very talented champion fighter. Going from his early immaturity making and losing ridiculous sums of money to becoming a mature man capable of sensitivity and gentleness. He understands his life better, and as a result is now a family man with six wonderful children. He is a terrific dad. He’s on an amazing path these days. Although he will always have a street-guy streak in him as most street guys retain, myself included, that doesn’t mean he won’t have a gentle greatness with his third act of life.

He is 59 years old tomorrow (6/30) and I wish him continued happiness and success as a business man. And an appreciation for a calmer more stable life going forward. I’m confident he will succeed. It also takes balls to acknowledge and conquer one’s own flaws including past horrible deeds. And past business mistakes. It also takes balls to get sober and stay sober. Amen.

Tomorrow (6/24) is my oldest brother Pete’s birthday. He passed in 2020 at the age of 85.

My sister Kathleen, my brother Denis, and I miss him deeply. Pete was the root of the tree that inspired us seven Hamill kids to aim high, dream big, work hard, and never wallow in self-pity—no matter how tough the road got.

Pete wrote novels, magazine features, screenplays, and popular nonfiction books. He was a true newspaper man—penning columns for several NYC papers and serving as editor for two of the city’s most iconic tabloids.

He helped many young writers with wise, generous advice and even hired several of them for their first professional writing gigs. Pete loved jazz, and before he ever wrote a professional word, he was a talented visual artist. His first paid writing job came by chance—but once he started, he never stopped.

Pete, of course, loved his loyal readers—even when they didn’t always agree with what he wrote. They were the fuel that kept his creative engine running.

He was a kind, generous soul who lifted people up—no matter who they were. It would take more than an IG post to truly honor him. He was beloved by many men and women.

We, his family, will feel the ache of his absence for the rest of our lives.

Happy Birthday, Pete.

I had the privilege to photograph Muhammad Ali many times in my career. I was truly thrilled each time.
He had won Olympic light-heavyweight gold in Rome in 1960. Four short years later, in 1964, he won the heavyweight title (for his first time) by stopping Sonny Liston who had been a heavy favorite. It was a major upset since most “experts” predicted Ali would be knocked out. He would go on to win back that title two more times in iconic matches with Joe Frazier and then against George Foreman in which Ali was considered a major underdog!

On June 3, 2016- 9 years ago today Ali went back to nature. He was only 74 years old. He died from respiratory disease brought on from years he suffered from severe Parkinson’s illness.

We should all remember the great courage, character, determination and talent of a truly great American- there will always be just one Muhammad Ali. He was bigger than life.

He lived a life by his own honorable code of ethics, freedom, and legitimate independence.

He was one of the most important people I’ve ever met in my storied life. He was humorous, determined, poetic, gifted and fun to be around. When he died 9 years ago today a certain chunk of the American way died with him.
I will feel his absence forever.

The first photograph of Shirley MacLaine was taken relaxing in her rented Las Vegas home the day after she had a spectacular opening of her live musical song and dance review at the new MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas in 1974. She was 40 years old. By then she had been a movie star for 20 years. In addition to singing and dancing (where her career began) she was also an author, a feminist, and a political activist. She is now 90 years old and has won multiple awards including an Academy Award, an AFI lifetime achievement award, and a Kennedy Center lifetime achievement award. She is still a stunning talent.

Gene Hackman an actors actor.
Sadly, one of the best actors whoever worked passed away yesterday. Gene Hackman made acting look effortless. He gave lots of meaning beneath the meaning of an acting part.
I had the pleasure to work with him a few times. He was a very nice guy.
I photographed him for magazines off the movie set as well. He was a total pro.
He was mostly a quiet dude.
We talked sports.
Between takes he’d read flying magazines.
I will miss him.

The above photograph was taken in February of 1975 in front of John’s Jukebox in he and Yoko’s apartment at the Dakota. John Lennon was very much alive. 5 years short years later, 44 years ago today, John was shot dead by a swine. That bum’s name won’t ever cross my lips.

“Sounds of laughter shades of life ringing”, Lennon’s gift of words, with and without the Beatles, will live on forever!
