🌟 Armory Show | Ink

Continuing the ink tradition, our booth also features a painting by experimental ink artist Yang Jiechang, and works by young ink painter Cherie Cheuk, who was the recipient of the Liu Kuo-sung Ink Art Award in 2022.Β

Originally from Guangzhou, China, Yang (Yang Jiechang) moved to Paris after participating in the exhibition Les Magiciens de Terre, held at Centre Pompidou in 1989, where he debuted the landmark series 100 Layers of Ink, where he applied black Chinese ink repeatedly to the same piece of traditional xuan paper, until the paper became saturated and more three-dimensional.

In contrast, Cherie Cheuk (Cherie Cheuk) adheres to the traditional gongbi tradition of highly detailed brush painting. Her subject matter and colors, however, are markedly non-traditional, as she uses pop culture references and a contemporary color palette in her recent work.

🌟 The Armory Show | Ink

One section of our booth explores the ink tradition through the work of pioneering artists Lui Shou-Kwan, Wesley Tongson, and Wang Dongling.

Lui Shou-Kwan was among the first ink painters to engage with modern abstraction from Europe and the US in the 1950s, opening new possibilities for generations of Hong Kong artists. Decades later, Wang Dongling brought abstraction into his calligraphic practice, allowing his expressive forms to move increasingly beyond traditional characters.

Wesley Tongson took a different approach, famously setting aside the brush to paint with his fingers and ink. The directness of this process resulted in expressive, imagined landscapes and a distinctive approach to the ink medium.
