We congratulate Sandra Cattaneo Adorno on the opening of her new exhibition, Fragments of Light, at the Palazzo Bembo in Venice alongside the 61st Venice Biennale. Fragments of Light showcases Cattaneo Adorno’s transformative approach to street photography, enveloping us in a mellifluous blend of sight, sound, and motion to explore the inherent fragility and unstable experience of perception. Adorno is debuting three dimensional work, bringing together large-scale video installation, thirteen monochromatic photographs, and a new photomosaic installation of 24 prints, influenced by her Brazilian background. Included photographs are printed using metallic silver ink on navy blue paper, evoking the silver-toned light of the moon, incorporating the viewer’s reflection into the works.

Permeated in reflections, metallic surfaces, and kaleidoscopic projections, the exhibition immerses the viewer in a meditative space where senses are set free from the limits of rational thought. Here, the static nature of the photographic image dissolves and becomes reimagined in fluid, dynamic relationship to the gaze that focuses on the relational aspects of the work. The show is presented by the European Cultural Centre Italy and admission is free.

We are pleased to present new work by Julie Blackmon.

Ruby Slippers
28 x 26 - edition of 10
39 x 36 - edition of 10
48 x 44 - edition of 10

Inspired by a pair of discarded ruby slippers, worn and passed down between three sisters, Ruby Slippers explores the emotional artifacts of childhood. With reference to The Wizard of Oz, Blackmon presents us with another emotionally complex image, exploring the shifting meaning of objects over time: from items imbued with magical escapism to relics of grounding and comfort.

“The ruby slippers aren’t so much about getting somewhere else anymore, but just about that quiet realization you already know the way back.” -Blackmon

The word “gold” conjures up a wide array of meanings. As a precious metal, the application of gold in the fine arts has been used for centuries to emphasize an object’s perceived value and importance. More recently, the overuse of gold, whether in interior design or in fashion, can swiftly tip the scale towards tasteless gaudiness. In some scenarios meaning only the best, the phrase “gold standard” can also ironically imply an everyday occurrence, as if being accustomed to the regular use of something reserved only for royalty.

This Thursday and Friday, our photography colleagues at the Princeton University Art Museum will be hosting a symposium: Learning Through Photography. The event will be held in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition Photography as a Way of Life: Minor White, Aaron Siskind, and Harry Callahan. The exhibition examines the careers of Minor White, Aaron Siskind, and Harry Callahan—influential photographers, teachers, and thinkers in the United States in the mid-twentieth century—and traces their impact on the field of photography.

The symposium will feature a series of lectures, roundtable discussions, and dialogues around the photographic process and its ever changing nature. These events are free and open to the public. See Princeton University Art Museum’s website for more details.

1. Minor White, Church Door, China Camp, CA, 1948
2. Aaron Siskind, New York, 1950
3. Harry Callahan, Detroit, 1943

Orotones, a short-lived photographic process popularized at the turn of the twentieth century, were created by printing a positive image on a glass plate precoated with a silver gelatin emulsion. Following exposure and development, the back of the plate was coated with banana oil and hand-painted with a gold-infused pigment, in order to give a golden hue to the photograph. Delicate in nature, these glass photographic prints and their gold backings were secured within ornate frames, and commonly sold as souvenirs of the American West. Gold Standards features nearly one hundred of these objects, drawn from the largest known privately held collection of orotones.
