10 Years Gone. But Purple Reigns Forever.
Today, April 21, marks a decade since the world lost Prince Rogers Nelson and not a single day has passed without his absence being felt like a frequency the universe can’t quite tune back into.
Born in Minneapolis, Prince pioneered the Minneapolis Sound and evolved genres across five decades, selling over 100 million records worldwide. But numbers don’t capture what Prince was. He was a force. A contradiction. A man who played every instrument in the room and still somehow made you feel like the music was improvised.
An intensely private artist who could play dozens of instruments, Prince revolutionised stage performance and racked up 7 Grammy wins during his lifetime yet he always felt untouched by industry, like he existed outside of it. He didn’t follow trends. Trends auditioned for him.
He gave Sinead O’Connor “Nothing Compares 2 U.” He gave The Bangles “Manic Monday.” He gave Purple Rain to an entire generation searching for something that felt like God and Saturday night at the same time. In 1984, he became the first artist to simultaneously hold a number-one film, album, and single in the United States. That’s not a career. That’s a coronation.
He was also a man of conscience sending money to Trayvon Martin’s family, traveling to Baltimore to shine a light on Freddie Gray’s death, and quietly funding organisations that created green jobs and taught urban youth how to code. The sequins were just the surface.
On the morning of April 21, 2016, a 911 call came from Paisley Park. He was gone at 57 taken by a fentanyl laced pill in a crisis that stole genius before it was finished.
Ten years on, Minneapolis is celebrating his life in a way meant to move the world from grief toward gratitude and honestly? That’s exactly what he’d want.
