Fridman Gallery is honored to announce our summer group exhibition, 𝑫𝒐𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑩𝒊𝒏𝒅: 𝑩𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰𝒕𝒔 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 curated by Catharine Clark ( )

The exhibition, in collaboration with Catharine Clark Gallery, examines how belonging is constructed, negotiated, withheld, and contested in America.

Taking its title from the concept of the “double bind,” the artists’ works contend with the contradictions embedded within systems of visibility, citizenship, identity, memory, and power.

Across diverse approaches: sculpture, painting, textile, photography, video, installation, and performance, the art works elaborate son the unstable conditions under which people are asked to assimilate, perform legibility, or navigate histories shaped by migration, colonialism, displacement, race, labor, and ecological transformation.

Finéus’s new body of work unfolds in dialogue with Marie Vieux Chauvet’s 𝘈𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘳 and the figure of 𝘓𝘢 𝘍𝘦𝘮𝘮𝘦 𝘋é𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘳𝘦 (The Disorderly Woman). Published in 1968, Amour is a landmark Haitian novel that critiques dictatorship, colorism, and gendered oppression under the Duvalier regime. La𝘓𝘢 𝘍𝘦𝘮𝘮𝘦 𝘋é𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘳𝘦 channels the Maroon spirit: the fugitive who refuses containment. The feminine form, traditionally tasked with healing and nurturing, is allowed to transgress.

Join us this Sunday, May 31, for a special performance by 𝚃𝙰𝙺 𝙴𝚗𝚜𝚎𝚖𝚋𝚕𝚎 ( ), one of the world’s premier ensembles for innovative electro-acoustic music.

The concert will take place within 𝒞𝒶𝓊𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃𝒶𝓇𝓎 𝒯𝒶𝓁𝑒𝓈: 𝒜 𝒮𝓎𝓂𝓅𝒽𝑜𝓃𝓎 𝑜𝒻 𝒜𝓃𝑔𝑒𝓇/𝒦ò𝓁è, an exhibition by Haitian-Canadian painter Laurena Finéus ( ), whose layered canvases depict a liminal, evolving landscape shaped by seasonal rains, earthquakes, and fragile infrastructure as a metaphor for our enduring quest for freedom.

TAK Ensemble will perform two works: Weston Olencki’s 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘯, an exploration of the histories, myths, and cultural impact of electricity through experimental sound and archival research; and Michelle Lou’s 𝘐𝘕 𝘈 𝘍𝘖𝘙𝘌𝘚𝘛, an immersive vocal work that creates an eight-channel sonic landscape of synthetic and organic sound, moving from mourning toward hope through live processing and rich harmonic textures.

𝑭𝒓𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒃𝒂𝒔, 𝒎𝒆𝒖𝒓𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒔 𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝒍’𝒐𝒎𝒃𝒓𝒆 by Laurena Finéus ( ) is featured in the artist’s debut solo exhibition, 𝒞𝒶𝓊𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃𝒶𝓇𝓎 𝒯𝒶𝓁𝑒𝓈: 𝒜 𝒮𝓎𝓂𝓅𝒽𝑜𝓃𝓎 𝑜𝒻 𝒜𝓃𝑔𝑒𝓇/𝒦ò𝓁è, on view through June 19, 2026.

Finéus’ new body of work unfolds in dialogue with Marie Vieux Chauvet’s “Amour” and the figure of “La Femme Désordre” (The Disorderly Woman), staging a quiet rebellion. Her anti-heroine interrogates the construction of the role of a “revolutionary hero”, often stripped of desire, or contradiction.

The feminine form, traditionally tasked with healing and nurturing, is allowed to transgress. Tenderness becomes revolt.

This Friday, Alex A. Jones ( ) will showcase a performance-lecture titled 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓕𝓸𝓻𝓬𝓮 𝓸𝓯 𝓔𝓡𝓞𝓢.

This lecture-performance explores the contours of 𝐸𝓇𝑜𝓈, an archaic Western philosophical conception of love as a cosmic force. Scholar and performer Alex A. Jones presents a monologue with audiovisual accompaniment that blurs science, s*x, and spirituality, reanimating Eros through a 21st-century ecological lens.

Written partly in dialogue with q***r theorist Jack Halberstam’s book 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘳𝘦, the lecture also draws on Pierre Klossowski’s “libidinal economy,” Sabina Spielrein’s “death as desire to become,” and Charles Darwin’s theory of s*xual selection as a driving evolutionary force.

This Saturday, Laurena Finéus ( ) will sit down with Saya Woolfalk ( ) to speak about the history of Finéus’s practice and the inspiration behind her new body of work.

This special artist talk is in celebration of Finéus’s debut solo exhibition, Cautionary Tales: A Symphony of Anger/Kòlè. [RSVP in bio]

Plants and elements referenced in Finéus’ work carry specific meanings: scattered magnolia seeds—once thought extinct in Haiti—embody fragility and endurance; fire symbolizes a painful yet regenerative process of liberation; pigeon pea and breadfruit seeds suggest fertility.

Finéus’ new body of work unfolds in dialogue with Marie Vieux Chauvet’s 𝘈𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘳 and the figure of La Femme Désordre (The Disorderly Woman), staging a quiet rebellion. Silenced yet seething, composed yet volatile, her anti-heroine interrogates the construction of the role of a “revolutionary hero”, often stripped of desire, or contradiction.

Fridman Gallery is honored to present Laurena Finéus’s first solo exhibition, Cautionary Tales: A Symphony of Anger/Kòlè. Balancing between abstraction and realism, the Haitian-Canadian painter captures a liminal, evolving landscape as a metaphor for our enduring quest for freedom. Her layered surfaces mimic the lush, rugged terrain and dense forests found in Maroon geographies.
