Summer ‘26 has been filled with nonstop joy and connection!

From the opening of “Lightscape”, the “Latinx Freedom” (Latinx Freedom Project) installation, and “Open Call: Stages” to beautiful communal moments from West Side Fest, clothing swaps with Mel Corchado (ita), and vibrant Plaza dance parties with Soul Summit music (Soul Summit Music), we had a blast spending each moment with every single one of you 🌟

Today we honor the life and legacy of Denise-Oliver Velez, a trailblazing activist, organizer, writer, and educator whose advocacy helped advance movements towards liberation and collective freedom.

As the first woman elected to the Young Lords’ central leadership, she challenged systems of oppression both within and beyond the movement, leaving an undeniable mark that continues to inspire generations.

Velez’s life reminds us that these histories live on through the people who carry them forward and the work of liberation continues through those who ensure these stories are seen, remembered, and endure because “the past is never truly past.” —Johanna Fernandez of Latinx Freedom Project()
