Harlem Stage

Harlem Stage The New York Times has saluted Harlem Stage as “an invaluable incubator of talent” and we have been hailed as an organization still unafraid to take risks.

Harlem Stage ignites the artistic freedom of performing artists of the Global Majority who are poised to create new works, new ideas, and a new world in which ALL people can flourish Harlem Stage is the performing arts center that bridges Harlem’s cultural legacy to contemporary artists of color and dares to provide the artistic freedom that gives birth to new ideas. We fulfill our mission through

commissioning, incubating, and presenting innovative and vital work that responds to the historical and contemporary conditions that shape our lives and the communities we serve. Our investment in this visionary talent is often awarded in the early stages of many artists’ careers and we proudly celebrate their increasing success. For nearly 40 years our singular mission has been to perpetuate and celebrate the unique and diverse artistic legacy of Harlem and the indelible impression it has made on American culture. We provide opportunity, commissioning, and support for visionary artists of color, make performances easily accessible to all audiences and introduce children to the rich diversity, excitement, and inspiration of the performing arts.

Harlem Stage proudly announces the appointments of internationally celebrated artists Divinity Roxx and Calvin Royal III as its new Associate Artistic Directors. In close collaboration with Indira Etwaroo, CEO & Artistic Director, Roxx and Royal will support a bold new era for Harlem Stage that began under Etwaroo’s tenure in 2024.

Roxx will continue her work as a musician and member of the Board of Trustees of the Recording Academy that produces the Grammy Awards™ and Royal will continue his landmark tenure as a Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theatre, while continuing to push the boundaries of contemporary dance.

“This is a defining and deeply meaningful moment for Harlem Stage,” said Dr. Indira Etwaroo. “Divinity and Calvin are extraordinary artists and visionary cultural leaders whose brilliance, innovation, and commitment to artistic transformation align profoundly with our mission. I believe the era of monolithic artistic leadership needs to give way to a more expansive and intersectional cultural future and Harlem Stage is proud to embrace a model of leadership that reflects the multiplicity of identities, disciplines, and perspectives shaping contemporary performance and civic life.”
