All month long we are going to spotlight our distinguished 2026 Parade Honorees and wonderful Parade Headquarters.

Today we are especially pleased to introduce our Grand Marshal Rev. Kevin Abels.

Father Abels was born in 1976. He is a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn for 22 blessed and fulfilling years. Father Kevin grew up in Middle Village, Queens, with his younger brother John. His parents, Linda and Larry Abels, came from strong Catholic families. As devout and dedicated Catholics, they were very involved in their parish of Our Lady of Hope and instilled the importance of faith and service in their sons’ lives.
Father Kevin attended Our Lady of Hope School for eight years and was very much drawn to the church by great examples of priests around him growing up - Msgr. Nick Sivillo, Fr. Guy Sbordone, Msgr. Grimaldi to name a few. He served as a sacristan in grades 7 and 8 and felt a strong desire to explore formation to the priesthood as a vocation choice.

Upon graduation from our Lady of Hope, Father Kevin was accepted to Cathedral Prep High School, which further deepened his desire to discern a priestly vocation. After graduating Cathedral Prep in 1994, he applied and was accepted to Cathedral Residence and Formation in Douglaston, Queens, while he attending college at St. John’s University. During his time at the college seminary residence, he truly enjoyed pastoral ministry as a catechist in the various parishes in Brooklyn and Queens.

After graduating with a BA degree at St. John’s University, he applied to the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington. Here he felt the Lord’s call to priesthood and gave the best of who he was to the Formation Program. He enjoyed formation and all that it entailed, as well as meeting lifelong friends in ministry.

Fr. Kevin was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 2003, and served as a Parochial Vicar at St. Sebastian Church in Woodside from 2003-2008. He then served on the faculty at Cathedral Prep, as well as in the position of Associate Vocation Director for the Diocese in 2010-2014. During this time, he was humbled to be called by the Lord to assist men determining the Lord’s plan for them in their lives. He enjoyed working with all those discerning a vocation to the priesthood and consecrated life. He also relished visiting various parishes, as well as the Catholic grammar and high schools, where he would share his own vocation story and discernment with those who were discerning as well.

Fr. Kevin returned to serve as pastor of St. Sebastian parish from 2014-2020. Currently, he is pastor of three parishes in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn: Our Lady of Angels, St. Andrew the Apostle, and St. Anselm. Father Kevin loves the people he is called to serve and enjoys working with these three wonderful parishes.

In his free time, Fr. Kevin enjoys being an avid sports fan! His favorite teams are the Patriots, Mets, Knicks, and Rangers. He is also an admirer of classical music, which helps put him in a reflective and contemplative mood.

Father Kevin is honored to serve as the Grand Marshal and is indebted to all the many people who have supported him over the years.

Congratulations, Fr. Abels! See him and all our honorees march down 3rd Avenue TOMORROW Sunday March 22nd!

Today we are pleased to introduce Deputy Marshal John Kane!

John Kane, 40, is a proud lifelong resident of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Born and raised in this close-knit community, John attended St. Anselm Catholic School, where he faithfully served as an altar server from grades 4 through 8. He went on to attend Xavier High School, graduating in 2003, and later earned his degree from St. Joseph's University in 2007.

John’s family has deep and enduring roots in Bay Ridge. Both of his parents and his paternal grandparents were born and raised in Bay Ridge. His maternal grandmother emigrated from Donegal, Ireland at the age of 17, bringing with her the warmth, faith, and steadfast Irish values that helped shape John’s character and outlook on life. On his paternal side, John’s great-grandfather was born in Belfast, County Antrim, in 1864. A devout Catholic, his family lived by the County Antrim motto, “Through trial to triumph,” a guiding principle that continues to inspire John today; a constant reminder of the perseverance, faith, and pride that run through his family’s Irish heritage. The Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade has been a cherished part of his life for as long as he can remember. From attending as a child, to working along the avenue during parade festivities as a young adult, to now having the honor of serving as a Deputy Marshal. John takes immense pride in representing his family, his Irish heritage, and the Bay Ridge community in the 2026 Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Today we are pleased to introduce Deputy Marshal Kathleen Conlon!

Kathleen Conlon is a proud lifelong Brooklynite, whose roots run deep in the Irish and Catholic traditions. A retired New York City Department of Education teacher, Kathleen dedicated 33 years to P.S. 204, the Vince Lombardi Elementary School, in Bensonhurst, where she shaped generations of students with the same spirit of service and gratitude instilled in her by her family.

Born and raised in Dyker Heights, Kathleen was educated at St. Bernadette Elementary School, and later Fontbonne Hall Academy. She continued her studies at St. Joseph’s College and the College of Staten Island, preparing for a lifelong career in education. Following in the footsteps of her mother, Eileen Fitzgerald, also a New York City Department of Education teacher, Kathleen embraced the vocation of teaching as both a profession and a calling.

Kathleen is the proud mother of 26-year-old twins, Maeve Conlon, a New York City Department of Education special education teacher, and Port Authority Police Officer Michael Conlon. Their commitment to public service reflects the strong example set by their family.

Her parents, Captain Joe Fitz, of the iconic New York City Circle Line ferry, and Eileen Fitzgerald, raised Kathleen and her three brothers—John, Kevin, and Patrick—in a home grounded in faith, family, and Irish pride. Kathleen attended mass weekly as a child at Our
Lady of Perpetual Help in Sunset Park, and as an adult at Visitation Monastery and St. Patrick’s Church in Bay Ridge.

Kathleen’s maternal grandparents emigrated from Counties Kerry and Mayo in the 1920s. Her grandfather worked as a conductor on the Brooklyn trolleys, and often shared the charming story of how “a lovely country girl from Mayo skipped her fare — sure didn’t I have to track her down for it.” He did indeed, and the two later married, settling in the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, where they raised their seven children. On her paternal side, Kathleen’s grandparents trace their roots to County Cork, a county steeped in military and maritime tradition. They settled in Bay Ridge, and Kathleen proudly continues to reside in her grandparents’ first home.

From an early age, Kathleen’s love of Irish culture was nurtured by her family and lifelong friends through Irish concerts, dances, trips to Hunter Mountain’s Irish Festival, and cherished gatherings in the beloved Irish pubs of Bay Ridge. Inspired by her grandparents’ and parents’ deep gratitude and commitment to service,
Kathleen has volunteered for over 25 years with local veterans through programs at her school and at the VA Hospital. In 2010, she partnered with John Bennett to reopen Bennett’s Pub as Indigo Murphy’s, where she helped host numerous fundraisers and charitable events benefiting the NYPD, FDNY, veterans, Holiday Toy Drives, Relay for Life, Mercy First, and many other community causes.

Kathleen is presently enjoying retirement as an adjunct professor of education at St. Francis College. She fills her days attending daily mass, participating in senior crafts (minus the “senior,” please), and traveling. Kathleen states that it is the honor of a lifetime to walk alongside her fellow St. Patrick’s Day Parade honorees, following in the footsteps of the Bay Ridge greats who have gone before them.

Congratulations, Kathleen! See her and all the other honorees as they march down 3rd Avenue on Sunday March 22nd!
