Since its founding in 2008 to 2014, Crossing Art has exhibited more than sixty exhibitions and public art projects in New York City. It has worked cooperatively with organizations and artists worldwide to broaden artistic discourse, deepen appreciation, and connect audiences and communities. Drawing on its unique position bridging North America and Asia, it serves both artists and clientele through public art installations, exhibition programming, artist representation and various curatorial projects. During the period that the gallery was in Queens, Catherine lee has contributed to many projects promoting emerging artists and projects. She has served as a trustee of the Queens Council of Arts and Queens Library Foundation, and was awarded the Rising Star Award by New York Mayor Bloomberg. From 2014 to 2016, the gallery shifted its focused on to curating public art projects in New York and China. The gallery subsequently moved to Chelsea, sharing a space with its subsidiary company, Crossing Collective. With representative offices in Shanghai, Crossing Art's ethos is to promote innovative artists and to nurture the best talent from a select group of contemporary artists whose work or roots lie in the tradition and heritage from Asia. Offering a unique perspective on the contemporary art world, its mission is to forge closer ties between the East and West, and to inspire the appreciation and understanding of art and design and its role in society.

Jiang Miao’s works comprise a unique system of symbols, with core symbols including spirals and celestial eyes. She believes that spirals resemble Tai Chi, symbolizing the integrated whole of spirit, soul, and body, as well as the cyclical order of endless repetition. This symbol transcends the limitations of three-dimensional space, guiding viewers into an immersive visual meditation. The series “Celestial Eyes” employs vertical or horizontal compositions to convey the idea that “human eyes perceive phenomena, while divine eyes see the truth.” It leads viewers to pierce through appearances and glimpse the essence of life. Jiang Miao has developed a unique “multi-layer overlaying carving technique.” She first applies up to 20 to 30 layers of acrylic paint onto wood or aluminum sheets, each layer recording her feelings, sunlight, or temperature of the day. She then uses homemade saw-like carving tools to carve through these layers, allowing the past light and shadow to be reborn with each stroke. This technique imbues the artwork with both temporal depth and spatial depth, with each incision becoming an irreplaceable mark of life.

Jiang Miao deploys painting as a durational practice—a disciplined protocol of accumulation and excavation. Layer by layer, acrylic is applied to wood panel, each stratum allowed to cure in response to the studio’s atmospheric shifts. The artist then intervenes with carving tools, incising the hardened surface to reveal buried chromatic strata, effectively performing time through subtraction.

These works operate in the liminal space between the organic and the cosmic. Circular motifs coalesce and dissolve, their incised rhythms generating a surface that breathes with the viewer’s kinetic engagement. This is not representation, but presencing—light is not depicted, but emerges from the material’s interiority. Informed by Eastern meditative inquiry, Jiang’s practice renders visible the cycles of concealment and revelation inherent to all natural systems.

The Shape of Living Light marks a critical introduction of Jiang Miao’s oeuvre to American audiences. Her rigorous synthesis of painterly tradition and conceptual carving offers a significant contribution to contemporary abstraction, positioning process itself as the primary subject.

Crossing Art is pleased to present The Shape of Living Light, curated by gallery founder Catherine Lee. Marking artist Jiang Miao‘s first solo exhibition in New York and her first major presentation in the United States, the exhibition will be on view from September 3 through October 3, 2026, bringing together a new body of paintings that grow from the artist’s sustained attention to time, material, and light (living light). 姜淼JiangMiao

Each of Jiang Miao’s paintings begins with acrylic on wood panel — she lays down color upon the panel, layer after layer, allowing the paint to settle over days and even weeks, settling quietly in response to the shifting light and atmosphere of the studio. The surface grows dense and complex. Only at a certain moment does she take up her carving knife, cutting back into the accumulated strata — releasing earlier passages of color so they surface once more, letting living light emerge from within. Every painting carries the memory of its own making — each layer applied and each incision made continues to act upon the painting‘s final surface.

On the evening of September 3, 2026, The Shape of Living Light — Jiang Miao’s first solo exhibition in New York and her first major presentation in the United States — opened at Crossing Art in Chelsea. 姜淼JiangMiao

The exhibition is curated by gallery founder Catherine Lee, who attended the opening and led guests through the show. The artist was present, and the evening brought together artists, arts professionals, collectors, and visitors, with art critics Richard Vine and Elga Wimmer, among other critics, also in attendance. Crossing Art presents The Shape of Living Light, Jiang Miao’s first solo exhibition in New York and first major presentation in the United States. On view from September 3 to October 3, 2026, the exhibition introduces a new body of paintings exploring time, material, energy, and light. Through layered acrylic and intricate carving on wood panels, Jiang creates dynamic surfaces that evoke microscopic life, natural forms, and the universe. Rooted in Eastern cosmology, her works reflect the interconnectedness of humanity, nature, and life.

Jiang Miao
Born in China, Jiang Miao received her BFA and MFA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where she currently teaches. Since 2003, her practice has explored the relationships between Yin and Yang, energy, life, and the universe, developing an Eastern cosmological perspective rooted in the unity of humanity and nature.
Incorporating symbols such as the Bagua (Eight Trigrams), “Xuan,” and vibrant colors, Jiang examines the interconnectedness of spirit, soul, and body while reflecting on the future of human civilization.

On August 13 at 6 PM, Crossing Art in Chelsea was filled with guests for the opening of A Story That Lives Within US: Ada-Volume II.

The exhibition marks the second chapter of Ada, an ongoing project initiated by curator Tzu-Ying Naomi Chan that explores migration, memory, and preservation. Catherine Lee, founder of Crossing Art, attended the opening, joined by participating artists, members of the art community, and visitors. Throughout the evening, the curator and several artists led guests through the exhibition, sharing how their works connect to the larger narrative of migration.

Ada Lin does not exist, yet every part of her story comes from real lives.

Drawing from oral history interviews with Taiwanese immigrants in the United States, the curator brings together many individual journeys of leaving home into the story of a single fictional character. Ada’s experience of migration is rooted in real events, reflecting the lives of countless people who left Taiwan and began again in unfamiliar places. Through her story, the exhibition gives form to memories, emotions, and experiences that many migrants carry quietly within them.

Exhibition continues through August 26, 2026.

Opening tonight! A Story That Lives Within US: Ada — Volume II is a multidisciplinary group exhibition featuring 17 artists curated by Tzu-Ying (Naomi) Chan. The show explores the stories, memories, and lived experiences of Taiwanese immigrants in the United States.

Volume II places particular focus on evolving life in New York during the 1980s and 1990s, a period marked by rapid urban transformation and social instability. During this time, many residents encountered challenges including economic hardship, public safety concerns, language differences, and cultural dislocation, while seeking stability and building new ways of life shaped by resilience, adaptation, and hope. Ada‘s journey unfolds in parallel with the transformation of New York City itself, reflecting the intertwined relationship between personal migration narratives and the changing social landscape of the city.
