Natalya Romaniw- soprano makes her Finnish National Ooppera & Baletti debut tonight! She returns to Helena, the role she created last season, in Mark-Anthony Turnage and Lee Hall's rapturously acclaimed and award-winning new opera, Festen, at Royal Ballet And Opera. Along with a stellar cast, she celebrates the 60th birthday of the family patriarch in rural Denmark (in Finland) at the end of the 1980s--confronting changing societal norms, racism, and controversy. Ten performances of this celebrated piece stretch from tonight until early May with James Hendry conducting the musical forces accompanying Richard Jones' magnificent production.

Parterre Box features another of William Guanbo Su's favorite recordings by a fellow bass. This time, he highlights Norman Treigle's Blitch among those recorded performances. It's a role William knows well, having debuted it to great acclaim a few summers ago at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis!

This performance was introduced to me by Norman Treigle’s granddaughter —very fine mezzo-soprano Emily Treigle; while I was preparing the role of Olin Blitch, and it completely changed my understanding of the character.
