Los Robles de Casabe, founded in September 2010, derived from a community bomba dance project at Casabe Houses to NYC's first Senior Citezen Bomba Dance Troupe. Los Robles de Casabe has increasingly become a recognized group of Puerto Rican representation through Bomba. Performances include Hispanic Heritage celebrations, annual ceremonies from numerous community organizations, local public schools, government offices (community affairs) etc. Some of the organizations include: Local 1199 Union, CCM Grand Street Settlement, H.O.P.E. Community, and Riverbay at Co-op City. Old Timers ceremony, Sunset Park Boricua Fest, and a live taping and interview for cable access show. Los Robles has even performed at the United Nations, representing Puerto Rican culture at a Latin American cultural fair. The list continues to grow. But we must take a moment to celebrate this great accomplishment. The celebration is based on the quality of performances as much as quantity. Watching them perform and meeting them at Casabe Houses on Sunday's have moved countless people. Los Robles are an example that life can continue to be vibrant and purposeful into the golden years. Los Robles contribute to reconnecting the social fabric that has been frayed in an individualistic culture. More people appreciate, value and honor their elders and culture from this experience. In addition, the group members provide a strong internal social network that had not existed before. This project has been of mutual benefit in supporting health, spirit, and intergenerational connection.
