With our audience, we seek to become a place for dance that is vital to the fabric of social and cultural life in New York, America and beyond. New York Live Arts is a re-imagining of the legacies of two extraordinary organizations, Dance Theater Workshop and the Bill T. Together we are embracing an adaptive approach to a field (and city) that has changed significantly since each founding organization's original creation.

Join us in celebrating the Ford Foundation Live Gallery Pride 2026 Exhibition, “Imagination/In Protest: The Body Invented” on Wednesday, June 24! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Harlem-born Black q***r poet, public scholar, and activist June Jordan said, “I have always had to invent the power my freedom requires.” Each of the works in this exhibition–– whether demanding attention or softly compelling the eye, interrogating the shape of presence or not appearing to be a figure at all–– unabashedly realizes the body itself as a source of power in q***r protest and creative expression.

Featuring works by Bradi Masci, Lola Flash, Caroline McAuliffe, Beau McCall, Daniel Roa, Diego Sánchez / Zava, Mei Bock, and MTHR TRSA!

Bill T. Jones sat down for a lovely conversation with Jasmine Hearn ahead of the World Premiere of “Memory Fleet: Beloved, Let’s Cross” this week!

As the umbrella project moves across the country, each new city brings an entirely new iteration, a new show. Hearn expands their research and listening practices to include a spectrum of places and people who have shaped their understanding of color, direction, gesture, and rhythm. Jasmine Hearn maps a dance of lessons with performance collaborators: Nora Alami, Maria Bauman, Melanie George, Dominica Greene, Jenna Hearn, Jennifer Newsom, Pamela Pietro, Angie Pittman, Kendra Portier, jhon r. stronks, Wayne Smith, Myssi Robinson, Charmaine Warren, and Tara Aisha Willis - with additional sonic collaboration by Jo Stewart and Ashley Teamer.

The question “Where is the Imagination in Protest?” was posed by Live Arts Artistic Director Bill T. Jones during a conversation with visual artist and activist Dread Scott at the launch of Fall of Freedom in 2025, an urgent call to artists and arts institutions to make work amplifying struggles against repression and state violence. We echoed this call to q***r-identifying artists of all generations whose work confronts our current political moment in imaginative ways.

A moment of reflection with Jasmine Hearn as they prepare for the premiere of “Memory Fleet: Beloved, Let’s Cross,” June 11-13!

Hearn’s “Memory Fleet” project began in 2014 with the creation of the interdisciplinary dance theater piece, “Memory Keep(H)er” with their grandmother. This performance was later made into a short film series — both iterations act as an alternative archive that listens and preserves the grandmother’s story of growing up in rural Texas in the 1940’s. Over a decade, the duet has expanded into the interdisciplinary project, which premiered in Houston, TX April 2024 with a site-specific installation and ensemble production – “Memory Fleet: A Return to Matr” was co-presented by DiverseWorks and Houston MET Dance.

“Memory Fleet: Beloved, Let’s Cross” encompasses a series of performances, a shared embodied practice, an evolving installation of archival materials, an expanding digital archive, and a body of original sound, text, and recipes — all celebrating the stories, dances, and gestures passed on through intergenerational lineages.
