New York Live Arts strives to create a robust framework in support of the nation’s dance and movement-based artists through new approaches to producing, presenting and educating. In addition to our deep commitment to individual artists at all stages of their careers, we strive to create rich, meaningful experiences for our audiences by engaging them in ways that are intimate and thought-provoking. With our audience, we seek to become a place for dance that is vital to the fabric of social and cultural life in New York, America and beyond. New York Live Arts is a re-imagining of the legacies of two extraordinary organizations, Dance Theater Workshop and the Bill T. Together we are embracing an adaptive approach to a field (and city) that has changed significantly since each founding organization's original creation.

Thank you to this year’s selection panel of distinguished artists and professionals from our field included: Taja Cheek, maura nguyễn donohue, Jordan Demetrius Lloyd, Rachel Mckinstry, and Jennifer Nugent.

The annual Fresh Tracks Residency & Performance program for early career movement-based artists will celebrate its 62nd year featuring Martita Abril as Artistic Advisor. The program originated at Dance Theater Workshop in 1965 to bring new choreographic artistry to the forefront. A shared evening of new works from the artists will be featured on our Spring 2027 season!

📣We have more exciting ‘26-’27 season news and updates to highlight - we’re ecstatic to share the following:

Ryan Charles-Marc, Camille Phelps, and Justin Rainey join the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company & Wyeth Walker becomes a full performer after being guest artist in our monumental National Tour this past season! Come experience their artistry free and outside September 10, 12, and 13 in the World Premiere of “Curriculum IV: Spin and Spin! Turn! Turn! Turn!,” commissioned by LMCC’s 2026 River To River Festival and presented in partnership with New York Live Arts and Battery Park City Authority.

Martita Abril returns to Live Arts as the Fresh Tracks Artistic Advisor! Martita was a Fresh Tracks artist in our 2013-2014 season and has co-curated the In/Between immigrant artist exhibition. This season’s Fresh Tracks cohort will be announced soon, so stay tuned!

Hank Willis Thomas will also be back at Live Arts! An exhibition of his striking work will be presented in the Ford Foundation Live Gallery, opening September 16. What a way to be greeted into our space this fall.

Lastly, SAVE THE DATE! Our vibrant Live Artery Festival will take place January 12-23, 2027! Earlier this year, Live Arts named 2019-2020 Randjelović/Stryker Resident Commissioned Artist Raja Feather Kelly the 2027 Live Artery Festival Guest Curator. Kelly’s programming, curated in partnership with Bill T. Jones, will be announced later this year and includes a new work by the feath3r theory.

Last chance to support our work by June 30 - donate at link in bio or by visiting newyorklivearts.org/support ❤️

“On September 12, 2001, I was supposed to premiere a work in Lower Manhattan.
That did not happen. No one needs me to explain why. The city changed. The meaning of gathering changed. We were all suddenly inside a history we could not yet understand. 25-years later, that interrupted work has come back to me.

I say “come back” carefully and not from a place of pure nostalgia. I return with people who are carrying everything that has happened since. This September, New York Live Arts will open its 2026-2027 season with a free public work in Lower Manhattan featuring Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company with music by Samora Pinderhughes.

A work that could not happen then will meet the city now. What does that even mean?

That is how our season begins. And the artists who follow ask their own questions…

Benjamin Akio Kimitch’s moves through Bugaku, Japanese American memory, family history; Dorothée Munyaneza asks how we summon someone history tried to erase; Joanna Kotze looks at leadership, agency, repetition, collapse, and rebuilding; and Ain Gordon follows grief where it actually lives.

A season about history, but not history as a textbook. History as pressure. History as something in the body and between bodies.

And I must say this plainly: artists cannot do this work on fumes. We are not only presenting performances. We are making conditions for this all to live.

I am asking you to make a fiscal year-end gift to New York Live Arts by June 30 because the season ahead needs backing. Your gift helps bring this work into the world. It helps us keep the lights on and the risk on. The dreaming on and the difficult conversations on. I know there are many urgent demands right now and that the world feels fragile, over explained and underfelt. But I also know this: people still gather.

This season begins with a return: not backward...but into the unfinished present. Please meet us there.
