Jordan’s Hokkaido leg:

“Two weeks road tripping in a campervan. All-time snowboarding, ramen at the base of the resorts that’ll make you cry, the freshest fish, sunsets, hiking volcanoes, and soaking in onsens right after... this place has my heart.

For this leg of the trip, the Olympus Stylus Epic DLX (Mju II) was still my main choice. It lived in my jacket pocket from the snowy streets of Otaru to the bustle of Sapporo. Shooting Fuji 400 gave these frames a clean, natural look that handled the varied lighting conditions perfectly. It was also one of the only film stocks I could find for under $25! Turns out film is expensive in Japan.”

Jordan came to us with a roll from Japan and we had to share it. He’ll be testing cameras for an ongoing collab with Gelatin Labs — and the MJU II was his pick for the trip.

From Jordan :

“We’ve heard and seen the hype around the Stylus Epic DLX (MJU II), but I really wanted to put it to the test.

When I was packing for Japan, I had to be ruthless with my gear. Between the snowboarding kits and the video camera, this MJU II was the only film camera I could truly justify fitting in my bag (I also figured I would buy some cameras over there). It lived in my pocket from the trains in Tokyo to the hills in Hokkaido, and honestly, it did not disappoint.

Why it earned its spot:

The Size: It’s arguably the most efficient design in film history. No case needed, no lens cap to lose—just slide the cover and shoot.

The Lens: That 35mm f/2.8 glass is legendary for a reason. Even on a point-and-shoot, the Portra 400 tones came back looking like they were shot on a much heavier rig.

The Speed: When you’re traveling fast, you don’t always have time to meter. The MJU II handles the heavy lifting so you can actually stay present in the moment.

This camera is not perfect, though. My biggest gripe is the tiny viewfinder that makes shooting at night super difficult. The other challenge is figuring out if the flash is going to fire or not. Most of the time, it is, even if you do not want it to. Still, the results always surprise me.”

Developed and scanned at Gelatin Labs. More from this collab coming.
