NYAP faculty member, Stanzi Vaubel is presenting new work this month! Composed by Vaubel and her collaborator Philippe Treuille, Directions for Making a Round Arc will premiere on May 31st at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, followed by a performance at The Space at Irondale on June 6th.

———

The Indeterminacy Festival Presents an ambitious new chamber opera, DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING A ROUND ARK, reimagining one of humanity’s oldest surviving stories. Unfurling in three parts, the work tells a Babylonian version of the flood: written a thousand years before Noah’s Ark. Bringing this tale to life are three soloists, joined by an intergenerational consortium of Brooklyn-based choral singers and instrumentalists, conducted by Yonatan Dvir.

Set in a richly imagined polytheistic world, the opera explores the creation of humanity as a solution to the gods’ burdens—only for that solution to spiral into chaos. As humans multiply, their noise and presence provoke the wrath of Enlil, king of the gods. Enlil attempts to reduce the population through plague, drought, and ultimately a devastating flood. Each time, Enki intervenes, culminating in a secret warning to build a life-saving ark.

Featuring: Alexandra Lang as Enki, Michael Anderson as Atrahasis, Bert K Johnson as Enlil. Created in collaboration with a vibrant consortium of artists—including the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Bass Ensemble, Grace Chorale, BK Treble, New York Choir Project, and musicians from the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra—this production blends ancient myth with contemporary musical storytelling. Our Performing Arts seminar stopped by Ars Nova () yesterday for a tour and panel discussion with staff led by Megh Cooper, a NYAP alum and Ars Nova’s Philanthropy Director. A big thanks to Megh, Alma Malabanan-McGrath (General Manager), and Sabrina Ryan (Brand Director) for taking the time to speak with our students.

……

Ars Nova is devoted to discovering, developing and launching theater, music, and comedy artists in the early stages of their career. Their programs provide protective, collaborative environments for artists to think outside of the box, amplifying genre-bending work with great care for the individuality of the artist. If you don’t already know them, you should!!

Thank you to Beni Jesu () for visiting our Advanced Studio Practicum this semester!

…….

Living by the mantra “constraints inspire creativity,” Bentrice Jusu’s innovative artistic career derives from her roots and includes work in, around, and far beyond her hometown.

Born and raised in Trenton, Bentrice is keenly aware not just of the challenges facing our communities but also of the transformative power and talent they hold. For over 10 years, she served as the founder and Executive Director of Both Hands Artlet, an organization that used contemporary art and unconventional educational practices to engage underserved teens in Trenton, guiding them to find their voices around the hard issues they face and using art to reclaim power over them.

She is particularly known for spoken word poetry and performance that has made its way to the Brooklyn Museum and Tanzania Film Festival, alongside the works of Alice Walker and Ntozake Shange. She also works in photography, film, and large scale public installations, including the “Art of Becoming” mural at Clinton and Olden Avenues in Trenton and a photo installation at Razor Sharp Barber Shop. Similar to her teaching methods, her place-based installations combine multiple mediums and derive directly from the perspectives of community members, particularly youth, who drive the creation process, speak their truth and reclaim their space.

NYAP’s Visual Art seminar recently visited Bolster Arts Residency! Students visited the studios of Delvin Lugo and Ryan Cosbert.

BolsterArts was founded in January 2025 with a clear mission: to give artists the time, space, and relationships needed to develop and sustain ambitious, uncompromising work.
Delvin Lugo () is a New York City-based artist whose work explores themes of home, intimacy, and identity through narrative figurative painting. These investigations have led him to experiment with home linens, whose worn surfaces reflect the intimacy and lived-in feeling of his work.
Ryan Cosbert () is a first generation African-American (of Haitian & Guyanese descent) conceptual artist who’s work approaches and focuses on her own humanistic experiences, self-expression, political issues and historical narratives. Cosbert aims to bring her viewers to see things from an internal / external perspective to explore and ignite conversations while encouraging higher consciousness. When it comes to Cosbert’s abstract paintings she creates a sense of control using the grid format to apply what she calls “tiles” which creates a geometrical balance.
Thank you to & and the artists in residence for welcoming our students into their space and sharing their work!
