Residency Recap: Amy Gernux

“We’re in a stage now where the work is beginning to reveal itself to us. This is coinciding with a deepening trust in each other and in the work, and lots of fearless experimentation among the group. It’s feeling very alive !!!”

Residency Recap: Alexandria Giroux

“My time at BAC rehearsing and developing DOOMSCROLLERS reminds me what a privilege it is to have time and space to live in process, day after day, with collaborators I deeply respect, in the unknown, finding something together.”

Residency Recap: Nyda Kwasowsky

“It’s a privilege to have such an immersive opportunity; where we cohabit, are able to focus and be in one place and work all day. It allowed experimentation and a deep creative process to evolve/emerge in the completion of a work. It was like an intensive, which was essential and needed for us all to discover our connections in the work and with one another.”

Residency Recap: Nelson Mejia

“Bethany proved so valuable for the continued development of Doomscrollers. The work has been a chameleon, morphing and shapeshifting since our first developmental residency last June. As the climate we’re living in shifts, the process has been shifting along with it, which feels right. These three weeks were paramount in ‘locking in’ what we’re trying to convey. I’m leaving this residency feeling both supported by the Bethany Arts community and emboldened by the process.”

Residency Recap: Justin de Luna

“Bethany,
You’ve been a lively time.
The warmth of the people.
The character of the center.
The spirit of the artists.
All of it.

Not only did your hospitality
contribute such wonderful fruits
to the creation process of Doomscrollers,
but also to the sense of community with the Feather Theory.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU”

Kicking off our residency recap series with a glimpse into Sara Gurevich’s world.

“Our time at BAC was an important reminder for me personally. It continues to be that making work with Raja, with this ensemble of collaborators, is the thing that orients me in my life. It is the thing that keeps me alive, enlivened, in life. It keeps me here. I hope you - all of you, any of you, out there, still left here - get a chance to see what we are up to. It’s going to be fu***ng wild and weird and absolutely necessary.”

Believe it or not, this is An experiment in liveness. Like, how does performance even compete with tv? We’re trying to think through that, and also get close. In DOOMSCROLLERS is a work where Attention replaces scrolling.

Something I love about Raja’s work is that it attacks you from all sides. There’s the movement of course, at times pedestrian, at times breathtaking in its technicality—all executed by his stellar, fearless cadre of performers. But there’s also the makeup–from whiteface to full-body paint and facial markings to brilliant prosthetics (coming soon!).
