Wagner won the vocal competition in 2021 and made her Carnegie Hall debut through the Naumburg Foundation. She joins the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, conducted by Brad Lubman, for an all-Mozart program including arias from Le nozze di Figaro and Idomeneo.

The Naumburg International Competition turns 100 this year. Born from the same family legacy as it is the oldest classical music competition in the world, and this summer we are celebrating that milestone by presenting two of its past winners. First up on June 23 is Tessa Lark.

Lark won the violin competition in 2012. She has performed at the Bandshell before, and this time she returns with The Knights for the New York premiere of Lisa Bielawa’s violin concerto PULSE, a piece written for her. The program also features new works by Caroline Shaw and Christina Courtin, the Barber Adagio, and Colin Jacobsen’s arrangement of Paul Simon’s American Tune.

From our Archive: July 31, 1962. The Naumburg Orchestra gathered at the Bandshell for a memorial concert honoring Elkan Naumburg, the philanthropist and music lover who started these concerts in 1905 and donated the Bandshell to New York City in 1923.

The soloist that night was Michael Tree, then a young violinist fresh off his Carnegie Hall debut. He would go on to become a founding member of the Guarneri Quartet, one of the most influential ensembles of the 20th century.

Swipe to see the program. This summer we are celebrating 121 uninterrupted years of music in Central Park.
