Not exactly what you think of when you think of Marcel Duchamp. I popped into this exhibition at MoMA The Museum of Modern Art wondering if I would be able to find any beauty or peace in the oeuvre of this conceptual, genius bad-boy and found this painting he made when he was just a teenager. Surprisingly, it invites contemplation and slowing down. Such a lovely find on 53rd Street.

As an appraiser, I often tell my clients that I learn as much from the back side of paintings as from the front. These panels by Raphael, currently at the Met, are a perfect example. These panels were originally wings of a small, personal alter piece. The two winged panels would close over the center painting, thereby exposing the backs. The backs of these two panels have a Latin inscription that translates to “Bless us, Virgin Mary, with pious offspring“. It was a request for fertility for the wealthy, pious couple who commissioned this altarpiece from Raphael.
