Urban Stages Outreach

Urban Stages Outreach Urban Stages Outreach brings a repertoire of 20+ multicultural plays and workshops to libraries and We are even the first theatrical experience for some.

For over 20 years, our OUTREACH PROGRAM has brought plays and workshops to all 5 boroughs of NYC in over 200 events a year. We have a repertoire of 20+ multi-cultural programs, ranging from plays that explore science, plays that spotlight historical figures as well as dance and mime workshops. Each show caters to specific age groups, from toddlers to families to Adult Learners. Many of the neighborhoods we reach (and return to multiple times) have little to no theatre and arts programming. Our programs travel mainly to libraries and non-profit organizations. They are all admission-free for patrons. For artists, our Outreach Program offers paid opportunities. We commission plays, pay royalties and fees allowing writers, directors, designers, actors and teaching artists to be working artists. Under the Outreach Umbrella are our art residencies. We are able to offer extended theater and art related residencies for weeks to months at a time to places like to senior citizens centers, community centers and schools. In the past, we offered programming to LGBTQ homeless centers, centers helping women reclaim their lives from incarceration and drug abuse and various non-profit agencies. Finally, annually we hold a Summer Theater Camp for children 10-14 years old. Professionals teach our campers about all aspects of theatre and the campers collaborate on an original musical. We offer partial scholarships making our summer theater camp more accessible.

What a way to end the summer! 💫

Our Summer Camp performers took the stage for an incredible final performance, sharing their creativity, courage, and joy with family, friends, and our community. From the first rehearsal to the final bow, we’ve loved watching these young artists find their voices, build confidence, and create together. ❤️

A huge congratulations to our campers, teaching artists, and everyone who helped make this summer so special!

Swipe through for a few moments from their unforgettable final performance. 📸✨

Earlier this month at Coffey Park, Urban Stages teamed up with Brooklyn Book Bodega and Red Hook West Houses for a day full of art, books, performances, and community... and our Hip Hop for All: Find Your Groove workshop brought the movement! ✨

Led by Urban Stages Teaching Artist Porshia Derival, participants were invited to get moving, find their rhythm, and most importantly, have fun expressing themselves through hip hop. From learning new moves to creating their own groove, it was all about confidence, creativity, and the joy of dance.

We’re so grateful to everyone who came out! 💥

🎙️ Every voice has a story worth sharing.

Last week, teaching artist Yhane Washington Smith led Your Audio Drama, an interactive workshop that introduced teen participants to the art of storytelling through sound. From writing to exploring recording, editing, music, and sound design, participants discovered how to transform their ideas into immersive audio experiences.

Thank you, Yhane, for inspiring our storytellers to bring their worlds to life, one sound at a time. ✨
