Japan Society Performing Arts

Japan Society Performing Arts Programs range from the traditional arts of noh, kyogen, bunraku and kabuki to cutting-edge theater, dance and music.

Japan Society's 25 - 26 performing arts season features a series of premieres based on the era defining works of Yukio Mishima; traditional noh and a contemporary take on a kabuki classic; avant-garde dance; an electrifying Ainu music concert; and more. Since the inception of the Performing Arts Program in 1953, Japan Society has introduced more than 600 of Japan’s finest performing arts to an ext

ensive American audience. The Program also commissions new works, produces national tours, organizes residency programs for American and Japanese artists and develops and distributes educational programs. In ten days, digital artist and choreographic mastermind Hiroaki Umeda returns to New York City with a double-bill of his latest works.

Featuring liquid-like, mercurial movement silhouetted against striking divisions of dark and light, Umeda's Moving State 1 is a cinematic group work melding technology and bodies as a single choreographic arc.

This past weekend, we were delighted to welcome back shakuhachi craftsman extraordinaire Perry Yung for an encore shakuhachi instrument crafting workshop at Japan Society!

Participants carved shakuhachi from raw bamboo, learned basic playing techniques, and then took home their new musical instruments. 🎶
