A Statement from the International Puppet Fringe Festival

In the past few days, some people have expressed concernsโ€”both in good ways and not-so-good waysโ€”regarding the reel we posted for our Call for Performances. This message is both a clarification and my official statement on the matter.

First, to be absolutely clear: the imagery in that reel is not AI-generated. It is licensed footage of an animated live puppet (harlequin) created with motion graphics and special effects by Canadian artist Magus in 2016, long before the rise of todayโ€™s generative AI tools.

It is important not to jump to conclusions without having all the facts.

For 40 years, Teatro SEA, producers of the International Puppet Fringe Festival, have proudly produced and supported live puppet theater, commissioning and employing countless puppet builders, designers, performers, and creators. Our commitment to preserving, uplifting, and celebrating the art of puppetry is unwavering.

While we understand the broader concerns about AI in the arts, we do not condemn artists who choose to explore new technologies. Art has always evolved, and creators must remain free to express themselves through the tools they choose.

The Puppet Fringe is a grassroots festival built on collaboration, community, and profound respect for this art form. Our mission has always beenโ€”and will continue to beโ€”to honor puppetry and the artists who keep it vibrant and alive.

Thank you to everyone who reached out. We appreciate dialogue rooted in curiosity, respect, and love for the craft. Dr. Manuel Morรกn, IPFF Producer
