To curtail our imaginations, so that our plays will be more "producible" or "marketable." "Does it *have* to change locations so many times?"
"No one will produce this if they have to hire an extra actor for this one scene." "Where are theatres going to find a cast this diverse?"
"I don't know who'll want to do something so ________ (political, long, dark, feminist, absurdist, vulgar, violent, weird)." They tell us this because they care. Because it's a jungle out there, and they want us to have the easiest sell possible. Write the play you want to write. It's already impractical. You might as well do what you want. And the most resonant work comes from the heart, not from compromising your imagination before you've even begun. You can write a single-location two-hander in this class, if you want. Or you can write a five-act space opera. Whatever you want. You have my permission to think as big, as small, as strange as you want. You have my permission to invent new universes, or to stay in this one and show me new corners of it. You can take this class from anywhere in the world.
