For Bill Berloni, one training moment stands above the rest: training the original Sandy in the Broadway production of Annie. It was the first time a dog stepped onto the stage to truly play a character, just a young trainer, a rescue dog, and a leap of faith.⁠
⁠
That first live performance could have gone either way, but it worked. In that moment, a lot shifted, not just for Bill’s career, but also for what rescue animals could be seen as capable of.⁠

This story holds true, even still. Every animal that comes through our doors is not only looking for a home, but also for a chance. Most often, that means a quiet life as a beloved companion, but sometimes, it means something more unexpected. Either way, it starts with the same thing: someone believing in them.⁠

Last weekend, as Wicked: For Good opened, we kept hearing the song “For Good” everywhere. Its lyrics felt unexpectedly fitting: “I’ve heard it said, people come into our lives for a reason…” Because two weekends ago, we lost a one-in-a-million dog— one who undeniably came into our lives for a reason.
Bowdie had been given up for adoption for being “too big” and having too much energy. We adopted him and brought him home to train for the title role in the new musical Because of Winn Dixie. Not long after adopting him, we got a call asking for a Sheepdog to play Nana in PETER PAN LIVE! on NBC. We didn’t have a Sheepdog, and a real dog had never been used in that role before. But we took a chance on this big, gray boy, and his performance was flawless. What he showed the world that night was his intelligence, his unwavering connection with people, and above all, a soul that touched everyone he met.
Bowdie did go on to play Winn Dixie— in three productions, with three young girls as his leading ladies. He became more than their scene partner; he became their companion, their confidant, their protector. With 123 cues, he achieved something unprecedented for an animal performer.
His career was as remarkable as his spirit. He starred in a beloved episode of High Maintenance (“Grandpa”), and producers even wanted to nominate him for an Emmy!
He appeared in TV movies, commercials, print ads, and, as Mr. Noodle’s dog Schnoodle on Sesame Street. Bowdie was truly a versatile and gifted actor.
But it was the way he met the world that people remembered most. Everyone who encountered him—onstage, on set, at an event, or simply in our home—was struck by the human quality of his eyes, the depth with which he engaged, his gentleness, and his sense of humor. He was a wonderful family dog, a steady pack leader, an extraordinary performer, and an even better friend.
He came into our lives for a reason. And he left a pawprint on every heart he touched.🐾

Our family is grieving the loss of our amazing boy, Bowdie, who passed peacefully yesterday after many wonderful years by our sides. We don’t have the words yet for a full tribute, but we will soon. Thank you for understanding as we navigate this heartbreak.
