SPOTLIGHT: J.J. CROMER
(September 10 - October 17, 2026)
Cavin-Morris Gallery announces a special Spotlight sampling of some of Cromer’s small and larger works. We are very pleased to have J.J. in the Cavin-Morris family and decided to curate a small teaser of his important Surrealist visions. His combinations of found collaged imagery and his own deeply subtle mark making seduce us of into an ever expanding realm of pictographic automatic writing and unexpected juxtapositions of imagery.
Michael Bonesteel brilliantly said in his article on Cromer in Raw Vision 115:
"Engaging with Cromer’s visual sagas can be like negotiating one’s way through the pages of one of Max Ernst’s surrealistic collage novels, such as The Hundred Headless Woman (1927) in which Andre Breton’s foreword reads: ”Many of these pictures, full of agitation all the more extraordinary for its cause being unknown to us {…} give an illusion of the veritable slits in time, space, customs and even beliefs”. With Cromer’s work we encounter much the same mystery and come away with an intuitive feeling or impression, more than a precise understanding of what is going on."
This spotlight brings together works from the past several years and includes three new works from this year, offering an opportunity to view the development of Cromer’s imagery and ideas across a recent period of his practice. The exhibition will be on view in the middle gallery from September 10 through October 17, 2026.
