Formerly located at 20 West 57th Street, the gallery moved to the location 17 East 76th Street in January 2000. At the 57th Street location, a number of historical exhibitions were held. One of them, Giacometti's "Early Works in Paris," was selected by the International Association of Art Critics in 1994 as the second best gallery exhibition in the United States. Since moving to its previous location at 17 East 76th Street, the gallery features artworks as private sales. Yoshii Gallery will explore the relationship between Modern Masters and Oriental Antiques.

空義 / GUGGI

“Kūgi” (空義) The characters 空義 are also intended to be read as “Guggi”.
is a term coined from the Zen concepts of kū / 空—emptiness—and mu—nothingness—and may be understood in the following way.
Kū does not signify mere nothingness or absence. Rather, it is a state liberated from all fixed forms and meanings—one that holds within it infinite possibility. Gi/義 signifies the essence, truth, or meaning that lies within.
Thus, “Kūgi/Guggi” is understood as:
To look beyond form and perceive its essence; to discover infinite presence and meaning within the void.
Just as an empty vessel is able to receive all things precisely because it is empty, mu is not a state in which nothing exists, but a fertile openness from which all things may arise.
Expressed more poetically:
“Kūgi/Guggi”—the meaning that dwells within the void.
The essence revealed only when form falls away.

A Quiet Encounter

The contemplative spirit of Ireland meets the aesthetic consciousness of Japan.

Permanence meets impermanence.

Light meets shadow.

Silence takes form.

A Timeless Form of Prayer

The sutra cylinders, imbued with the prayers of the Heian period, transcend a thousand years of silence to find new life within the serene spaces woven by Tadao Ando.

Here, they are no longer mere relics of history. Guided by light and shadow, they stand as timeless presences, quietly revealing a universal beauty that speaks as profoundly to contemporary art as it does to the distant past.

When the prayers of a millennium ago resonate with architecture, the boundaries between past and present dissolve. The sutra cylinders emerge once more—not as archaeological treasures alone, but as enduring works of art, carrying the spirit of eternity into our own time.

A beautiful resonance

Separated by distant ages and civilizations, they do not reject one another in their quiet silence; rather, they allow their respective scars and prayers to resonate together.

The passage of centuries inscribed in Roman stone and the spiritual depth dwelling within the Kamakura bodhisattva transcend nation and era, giving rise to a single, serene harmony.
