Gitterman Gallery

Gitterman Gallery Art Gallery Gitterman Gallery is committed to presenting great art in photography.

We have over 30 years of experience in the field and specialize in connoisseur level photographs. In addition to representing artists, estates and private collections, we maintain an inventory of selective work that spans the history of the medium in a full range of styles and periods. We have fine examples of work by established artists and we also champion artists that have been overlooked by the history of the medium. We are available for guidance in establishing or developing a collection as well as buying or selling at auction.

Ray Metzker, Mykonos, Greece, 1979

Metzker created the images in Pictus Interruptus (1976–1981) by holding an object in front of the lense while maintaining the focus on the scene behind it. He once explained his motivation for starting this series:

“I wanted change. I wanted contrast–something to resensitize the seeing process…I am looking for that unknown which in fact disturbs, is foreign in subject but hauntingly right for the picture, the workings of which seem inexplicable, at the very least, a surprise.”
